Opinger Mual is the first Nuan Ambassador to the Federation Starship Leviathan. She was assigned to act as Ambassador to help guide the Leviathan and her crew through an area of space lost by the Nuan's in a war 147 years ago to an enemy called the Bariens.

Although the guidance of the Ambassador worked well, the Bariens discovering the new alliance with the Federation, declaring all out war against both the Federation and the Nuans. This led to the destruction of the Nuan's homeworld.

Opinger is 29 years old and is the Nuan Fleet Minister's granddaughter. She holds the rank of Major in the Nuan air command and was Operations Chief for the Nuan Fleet Headquarters before joining the Leviathan.

The Nuans seem to be closely related to the Bajorans in appearance and medical test have shown that their genetic makeup is very close to the Bajoran's. Most doctor's have come to the conclusion that the Nuan's are either a Bajorian colony who left Bajor over two thousand years ago or are descended from a common ancestor of the Bajorians.

Major Opinger was appointed Ambassador to the Leviathan because she was very knowledgeable about the area of space the Nuans lost all those years ago.

The Nuan's are a matriarchal society, due to the fact that the war with the Bariens killed ninety five percent of the male Nuan population. The remaining Nuan males were taken to a place of safety, where their numbers are again beginning to increase.

She has requested to remain onboard the Leviathan as an Ambassador to both the Federation and the races of the Beta quadrant, an offer which has been gratefully accepted.
