Gunung Tebu (1039m)

Gunung Tebu , which is in Terengganu ,is one of the easiest mountains to climb. The peak is very unique and has all kinds of tales attached to it. People are supposed to practice silat there, meditate and there is even a grave up there. To me, the mountain is really unique, because you can spend the whole day walking around the peak area, which seems to never end. The scenery around the peak is also beautiful, with stunted trees and tall long grass. Bear in mind that this peak is also believed to be "keras" or owned by spirits. It is the norm to control your actions and to be cautious to what you say up here.
The hike up can be done in about 5-6 hours, with a lot of uphill, only with a small stretch of flat ground in the early part of the track . The campsite where people normally choose to camp is not actually at the peak, but about 20 minutes further down. There, I have witnessed one of the most spectecular sunrises I've ever seen with the views of Pulau Perhentian in the background. There is also a small stream further down, about another 20 minutes from the campsite.
To get to the starting of the trek you have to take a bus to Besut town. From there, take a cab to Hutan Lipur Lata Tembakoh. It would also be a good idea to ask the cab driver to come back at an agreed date because the place is rather secluded and getting back to town would be a problem. When you reach Lata Tembakoh, cross the suspended bridge on your right and take the cement path on your left. Continue until the river narrows and you reach a campsite where there are two rivers joining into one bigger river. This campsite is known as Sungai "Y" and is suitable as your first campsite should you arrive at Lata Tembakoh late in the evening. From the suspended bridge to sungai "Y" campsite, it should take about 30 minutes.

Day one

The climb up should be rather ok, though the trek ascends almost all the way. There are numerous campsites along the way, but they are rather small and rather dirty. About 3/4 way up, you will pass a tall piece of rock jutting out , about 10 meters high, which is called Batu Mat Hassan. From there, the peak should be reached in about 2-3 hours. When you reach the peak, keep to your left, and walk further down. You should pass a rakan muda signboard put up by PMM. Continue down until you reach a huge boulder on your right, which you can climb up. From the top of this boulder, it is possible to see the campsite about 2-3 hundred meters away. Continue the trek until you reach some clear area, with some big rocks jutting here and there. This is where you should camp. The trek to the small river is on the right, but is rather difficult to explain. It would be advisable to carry up your own supply if you're climbing without a guide.

Day two

The trek down will be the same , and it is possible to reach Lata Tembakoh within lunch time. By evening, after lunch and a short dip in the river , you should be able to make it to Besut town.
