Growing up!?
 Torshus Folkehøgskule

I was born and grew up at this school in Orkdal, and my parents, Dagfinn and Hjørdis, run the school for over 30 years.  I was probably brought up to spend my life as a school rat.  I also taught a couple of units of' 'Folk Dancing' and 'How to survive in a snow cave' at Torshus in later years. I

Orkdal Vidaregåande Skole (Follo)
This was my high school in Norway (1965-70).

Wellington Boys College
On leave from Follo - fed up with school(!) - I was a student at this school in New Zealand most of 1967 - playing soccer and learning English.  This turned my life around.

Becoming a teacher:
Elverum Lærarskule
My Teachers' Training College was in the village of Elverum, in eastern Norway.  I spent two years here from 1971 to 1973.  It is now called Høgskolen i Hedmark.

Norges Idrettshøgskole
I went to this University of Physical Education and Sport in Oslo.  It is situated beautifully next to a lake called Sognsvatnet on the edge of the vast forested area called Nordmarka north of the centre of the city.
Peder Morset Folkehøgskule

My first position as a teacher was at this brand new Folk High School in Selbu in Mid-Norway.  We only spent one semester here in 1977, while waiting for my Australian residency visa.

Then - to Australia:
Coomera State School
This was my first school in Queensland, Australia, and I taught a Year 4 class here during the last term of 1977.  I was also asked to coach and umpire the Senior Cricket Team (Year 7).  I had never seen a cricket match prior to umpiring my first match, and had to seek advice from the much more experienced 12 year old players at times.  But my extensive sporting background, and the many matches I listened to on the radio while picking fruit in Otago, New Zealand, enabled me to do a fair job - maybe.  Later, I qualified as a Level 1 cricket coach in Brisbane.

Western service - small town life:
Roma State School
In 1978 I taught at Roma SS - a Year 5 class.  It was a terrific class!  On 14 September this year Yanicke was born.

Dalby Central State School & Dalby South State School
In 1979 I became a Physical Education teacher, something I enjoyed for many years to come.  I spent 4 years at these two schools, and it was in this town we bought our first house.

On leave - in Denmark!
Nørgaards Højskole
On New Years Eve in 1982 we arrived in Bjerringbro, a small town in central Jutland, Denmark.  I had been given a job as a  guest teacher for a year (part time) at this traditional Danish Folk High School, while on leave from Education Queensland.

Back 'home' again - back to the city:
Wishart State School
10 years at this school (1984-93) - my most enjoyable years teaching - is my longest association with a school (apart from Torshus).  This was Yanicke's primary school, too.  This school was called Mt Gravatt South SS when Yanicke and I first went there.

Mt Gravatt State School
I taught at this school two days per week for 5 years (1989-93) while Wishart SS was my base school.  This school had a unit for visually impaired students, which gave me other experiences.
Griffith University
I got my Bachelor of Education degree at this university in 1993, after two years of part time studies.

On leave again - in Norway this time:

Nordmøre Folkehøgskule

After having been at Wishart SS and Mt Gravatt SS for so many years, we went to Norway.  I taught at this school in 1994-95 during 18 months  leave from my job with Education Queensland.

Back home to the city, and my last stance as a PE:
Morningside State School
This was my base school during my last 5 years (1996-2000) as a Physical Education teacher.

I taught Physical Education and Sport at many other schools in Brisbane from 1984, until I became a Teacher/Librarian in 2001:
1984-93:
Marshall Road SS

Dutton Park SS

Buranda SS

Mt Petrie SS

1995:
McDowall SS

Newmarket SS

Wilston SS

Sommerset Hills SS

1996-2000:
Cannon Hill SS

Seven Hills SS
Junction Park SS MacGregor SS Murarrie SS Norman Park SS

Life becomes quieter - and more rewarding again!

Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
This is the university in Brisbane where I became a Librarian after 2 years of part time studies in 1999 and 2000.

Bulimba State School
Bulimba SS was my first appointment as a Teacher/Librarian - in 2001.  I worked full time at this school the first 6 months, until Patrice came back from leave after having had her first baby.  She wanted to work 3 days a week on her return, so I was given the 3 days-a-week job at Mayfield SS in addition to my 2 days at Bulimba.

Mayfield State School
This was my base school for 3 1/2 years from July 2001, until I retired on 24 December, 2004  (what a Christmas present that was!).  I taught and looked after the Library there 3 days per week, together with my very capable assistant, Denise Turner.

RETIREMENT!
Yes, I retired on 24 December, 2004, so Mayfield SS and Bulimba SS became my last two schools.
It is fantastic to be able to retire in good health, with Julie by my side, with Yanicke's education almost completed, and Cole developing into a healthy grandson full of vitality  -  and with many plans and hobbies to keep us busy.
