The USS Horatio Nelson is named for the great British admiral of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Despite modest stature, blindness in one eye, and the loss of an arm in battle, Horatio Nelson was instrumental in modernizing naval tactics and strategy. His greatest victory came at the pivotal Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Nelson died from wounds sustained in that battle and was buried in Saint Paul's Cathedral. A monument known as the Nelson Column was erected to Admiral Nelson in Trafalgar Square, London.
The USS Horatio Nelson, a Prometheus class starship, was constructed at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, Mars and launched on Stardate 0501.02 under the command of Capt. James Britanicus. This vessel operates in Far Point Fleet, whose mission is "to protect the Federation from all threats, foreign and domestic." The Nelson is headquartered out of Starbase 25.
