WESTFORK HIKE
MAPS--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PLANNING
When backpacking there are a few essential items that need to be brought with. One of the first things is a backpack to hold it all in. The pack that i have chosen is an old BRITISH MILITARY PACK. It seams like it would hold everything that is on my list and i figure that if its good enough for the British Military its good enough for me. Another thing that will be important is garbage bags. These will be used to take our trash out of the forest and back home with us they also serve as emergncy ponchos for us and our equipment. I think that ten should be sufficent. Next is the stuff sacks the blue and orange ones we already have will do. These are going to be used for our bear bag and also because i suspect you are planning to bring extra clothes, these also work to compact clothes into. I will need to get a WOOL BLANKET because i will probably not have enough room in my pack for a sleeping bag and the blanket will be all i need. The next thing on my list will be a compass. The LENSTATIC COMPASS is better than an orientiering compass because it is more acurate. Im not so sure if i need a watch but it might be nice to have so i might go out and get one any ways. An ANGLE HEAD FLASH LIGHT is also gona be needed because it is easier to read maps at night with these and it will also look right on my cammo outfit. Also glow sticks are important because we do not want to get seperated from our gear at night like that time you where camping and only had three matches, but thats another story. Anyways i would recomend that we each bring about four of them because they are important. They can be bought at the Army surpluss store for about $1.98 each and there quite big. The next thing we need are maps. These are important and we need as many of them as possibole and we each need to have a copy of them. To see the maps i have found go to the MAPS section of this web site and take a look. Another thing that i will be adding to my supplies is a JUNGLE HAMMOCK . But the one I will be buying is at the millitary surpluss store. To tie the hammock up to a tree as well as suspending the bear bag I will be purchasing 100' of General Purpose Utility Rope . This will prove usefull on the trail for a lot of things but the rope i am getting is actualy PARA-CORD and it has a 520lb test strength to it. One of the most important things on this trip is having suitable drinking water. Your water purifier will take care of this but it is always safe to cary purification tablets. For this i have chosenPORTABLE AQUA water purification tablets. I will also have watering holes on our trip plan that we can restock our supply at. All the camping sites i have been to recomend a wistle so i will pick one up but I dont see much importants to it. We will not need a signal mirror because the compas i am purchasing has one built into it, but the next thing i have on the list is a must. Lots of knives. Call me insecure but i like having pleanty of large mean dangerous knifes around. The one in particular i have chosen is one still in use today. It is the USMC KA-BAR. It is a particularly nasty little knife that the Armed forces have been using for decades. Before I get off the subject of water I will be purchaseing several 2 litier bladders from popular along with a military canteen that can be attached to a belt. The belt will be key because they say even if you dont normaly wear one you will when you get back from your hike. Also it will be holding things like my knife and canteen. I will probably get it from popular because they sell them and i have a fifteen percent discount throught my happy camper card. I have also read that a bandanna is a good thing to have and there only $.98 at the surpluss store. Although i am not bringing spare clothes i will be bringing spare sox because thos are a nice treat to have after hiking, and those to can be purchase at popular. The boots are going to be millitary issue and are going to be semi comfortable so i can hike but not so comfortable that i wanna wear them to bed. And those to are at Popular for $21.00. I want one T-SHIRT and that will be a brown one, nothing fancy but somthing comfortable. Of course my uniform would not be compleate without some BDU TROUSERS. BDU stands for Batle Dress Uniform. They have six pockets and are made of Ripstop Cotton. And even thought i can make a poncho out of trash bags i would also like to have an emergency rian poncho, wich i can get at Popular pretty cheap. If your wondering what kind of first aid kit i will be carying, wonder no more it is an ATWATER CAREY first aid kit and it is the best for the money. This to can be picked up at Popular for about $30.00. Then there are a few other things on the list that need to be brought upthat can be purchased at Popular and at the grocery store. They include 1 Emergency Blanket, 1 Candel, 1 Fire Starter, 1 Small Bottle of Sunblock, 1 Pack of Water Proof Wind Proof Matches in a Water Proof Case, 1 Bottle of Insect Repellantl, 1 lighter, 1 Tooth Brush, and 1 roll of Toilet Paper. I will also be bringing a few other things like a carton of smokes and my jacket, but one thing i forgot to mention was the FOOD!!!!. I will be packing MAINSTAYS RATIONS. They are very cheap and they will do. If you have any comments email me at MSKA6@hotmail.com
