Sedua to Tashi Gaon:

Softball, Soft Day And A Shower To Boot

Here at Sedua this afternoon, many of the trekkers and Sherpas joined in a game of Softball, with a rolled up sock as a ball and a frying pan as a bat. It had been market day and the main streets were still full of people milling around. They heard the noise and started drifting across. Soon we had a big crowd watching.

I saw Steve repeatedly taking pictures of me, but he explained that he was capturing reaction shots of the crowd behind me. We exchanged places so that I could have a go.

And the audience reaction....

Next day was a soft one from Sedua to Tashi Gaon and we arrived there by noon.

This was my fourth day on carpet slippers. I did twist my right knee today, but perversely I want to keep trekking in them: at the end of every day I ask Dawa if can do the next day's walking in them.

He thought I might get away with it tomorrow, but that will be the last time. Rumours say there is 7 feet of snow on the Shipton La, which we go through the day after tomorrow.

It was a great shame to leave Sedua, but Tashi Gaon, the last village we meet until we come back down again, was also outstandingly beautiful.

Many of the houses have roofs of twisted bamboo. Our campsite, on another elevated terrace site, also had access to showers. Luxury of luxuries!

Hot water is brought over from the house to the tank in the shower hut.

The tank hangs above a tap. You dribble water from the tap as you do the washing and soaping part of the exercise.

You then turn the tank upside down and pour all the remaining water over your head. Very satisfying!

We let some of our porters go today now that we have consumed part of our rations.

This evening we had our first rain, which was then followed by the first hailstones, then the first thunder and lightning.

When we were in the meal tent having our dinner, torrents of rain came down, accompanied by high winds.

Little did we know it, but this was a taste of things to come.
