Oregon Trip Reports

Oregon Photos

In April of 2006, a business trip in Eugene enabled me to hike in Oregon for the first time. I only had one day, and chose to spend it in the Columbia River Gorge. First I visited the country's most scenic interstate rest area at Multnomah Falls. Then I hiked 6 miles of the Eagle Creek Trail past a series of spectacular waterfalls.     Photos    I returned to the area in April, 2011. On that visit, I did short hikes to Upper Latourell Falls and Bridalveil Falls and a 6-mile loop combining Wahkenna Falls and Multnomah Falls.     Photos In December, 2012 I spent several days working in Hood River, also in the Columbia River Gorge. December is the rainy season, but I still managed to do several waterfall hikes, including Elowah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Ponytail Falls, Triple Falls, and Wahclella Falls.     Photos.

In July of 2016 Christy and I took our summer trip to Oregon and Washington. We started our trip with several days near Eugene. On the first day we did a fairly short hike to Abiqua Falls. The next day Christy did a mountain biking ride on the McKenzie River Trail while I hiked the Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park.     Photos. We spent the next day on the coast checking out The Spouting Horn, Thor's Well, and the Devil's Churn at Cape Perpetua.     Photos. The next day we left Eugene and headed towards Crater Lake National Park. We spent the day visiting several waterfalls and a hot spring in the Umpqua National Forest.     Photos. We spent the following day hiking and sightseeing in Crater Lake National Park.     Photos. From there we drove up to Bend to do an extended backpacking trip in the Three Sisters Wilderness.     Photos. After the backpacking trip, we spent a couple of days visiting waterfalls, hot springs, and caves in the McKenzie River Valley and Deschutes National Forest.     Photos. Then came the big event - a climb of South Sister Volcano.     Photos. The next day was a recovery day of sorts, as we visited several waterfalls and caves around Bend.     Photos. From Bend we drove up to George, Washington for two Phish concerts at The Gorge Amphitheater. Afterwards, we returned to Oregon, car camping at Lost Lake outside of Hood River for three nights. On the first afternoon we toured the Columbia River Gorge and I did a solo hike to Lower Oneonta Falls. The next day I hiked it again for photos before we hiked together to the many beautiful waterfalls of Eagle Creek.     Photos. The next day Christy mountain biked to Trillium Lake and I dayhiked to Paradise Park on the northwest side of Mount Hood.     Photos.
