Liwa - The Empty Quarter

My first trip to Liwa since Desert Challenge 2004, and the main reason I had the extra fuel tank fitted to the Defender, given the pathetic 50L tank and its thirst for fuel.

Five of us met at Umm Suqeim Spinneys and drove down to Massafa just outside of Abu Dhabi and we were joined by Chris in his Rangie then set off for Liwa.

En route, Sanjay who had left later from Sharjah caught up with us, and we met up with Taher who had come from Ruwais and Alex who had made his own trip there from Dubai.

The weather was not too kind with strong gusty winds blowing up the sand

Deflation time

When we eventually had to deflate we encountered the first tyre problems of the day, Vaughan had a leaky valve, which I replaced using the one from his spare, and Anand had a nail on the front LH wheel, which was replaced using the spare.

After a delay we set off and it was not long before Anand fell foul of some soft stuff.

Anand Stuck

Chris went into rescue and became stuck too with no room to maneouver, so it was left to Taher to extract Anand, and Chris managed to drive out afterwards

Toyota Troubles

Taher began to have electrical problems with all his warning lights flashing, and since we were close to the Moreeb Hill track he decided to bail out when we reached it.
