What is a Modem?

The device mostly used to connect to the internet is known as a modem. A modem is a relatively simple device which acts as an interface to the telephone network for a single PC. The connection to the internet itself is made by software running on the PC (often part of the operating system itself). The equivalent for ADSL is a NIC (Network Interface Card) such as the Ni200. This acts as the interface to an ADSL network for a single PC, again the actual connection to the internet is managed by software running on that PC. ADSL modems require specific software running on the PC to function - for this reason not all PC operating systems are suitable.

The new DSLAM cards, the company also announced Web Access Manager, software that enables network administrators to manage the ASAM 7300s via a Web interface. Web Access Manager is an alternative to more expensive management platforms that perform more functions and is meant primarily for small service providers that don't want to make a major management investment.

The ASAM 7300s also support technology for testing individual customer phone lines to find out whether or not they can support DSL service. The tests can be done remotely from a network management station, obviating the need to send any technicians to the customer site at the other end of the wire.
