Kanum Monastery

About 40 kms via Akpa beyond Kalpa, Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, India is the ancient Buddhist monastery of Kanum. It is home to many sacred texts and is revered far inside Western Tibet too. It was here that in the early 1820s that a Hungarian Christian monk - Alexander Csoma- studied these texts for amongst other things to learn about the origin of the Magyars- the old predominant people of Hungary. He had also studied in Phutkal Monastery of Zanskar and Hemis of Ladakh.
