Welcome to the JefferyGuide Doctor Who Area.

What is Doctor Who? Doctor Who is one of the longest running science fiction tv shows in the history of broadcasting. Doctor Who began broadcasting in England in November of 1963, and follows the adventures of a man known as "The Doctor" who travels through both time and space in a ship called the Tardis. Because the Tardis can travel through space, and can time travel as well, The Doctor has the ability to go anywhere.

The Doctor belongs to a race of people known as the Time Lords. Over many centuries, the Time Lords perfected time and space travel to a very fine art, using highly advanced technology (for example, due to advanced technology known as "temporal engineering", the ships of the Time Lords are bigger on the inside than they are on the outside. The ships of the Time Lords are also able to change their outward appearance to blend in with the surrounding environment, although The Doctor's ship is stuck in the appearance of a 20th Century Earth police call box because of a glitch in the ship's systems).

The Time Lords also have an interesting way of cheating death. If a Time Lord is in danger of dying, he or she can simply "regenerate", which means that his or her body actually takes on a new appearance, and quite literally bocomes a new person in the process. The Doctor has so far regenerated ten times during the run of Doctor Who.

Throughout the run of Doctor Who, The Doctor has had a number of companions who accompany The Doctor on his various adventures. The companion provides a surrogate with whom the audience can identify, and serves to further the story by requesting exposition from the Doctor and manufacturing peril for the Doctor to resolve. The Doctor regularly gains new companions and loses old ones; sometimes they return home or find new causes — or loves — on worlds they have visited. Some have even died during the course of the series.

Special Report:

David Tennant leaving Doctor Who
(10/29/08):

At the National Television Awards in Britain, David Tennant announced that after 2009 he will be leaving Doctor Who and his role as The Doctor. The BBC had the following on their website:

David Tennant has announced that he will leave the award winning BBC drama "Doctor Who" when he has completed the filming of four special episodes which will be screened in 2009 and early in 2010.

David Tennant first appeared as The Doctor in 2005 and has gone on to star in three series and three Christmas specials as the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord. The BBC has confirmed that David will continue to play The Doctor in the four specials that will make up the 2009 series before a new Doctor takes over for Series 5. Tennant will also star in the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special titled "The Next Doctor" this year.

David Tennant comments "I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the TARDIS console forever and I fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will. You would be prising the TARDIS key out of my cold dead hand. This show has been so special to me, I don't want to outstay my welcome."

"This is all a long way off, of course. I'm not quitting, I'm back in Cardiff in January to film four special episodes which will take Doctor Who all the way through 2009. I'm still the Doctor all next year but when the time finally comes I'll be honoured to hand on the best job in the world to the next lucky git - whoever that may be."

"I'd always thought the time to leave would be in conjunction with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner who have been such a huge part of it all for me. Steven Moffat is the most brilliant and exciting writer, the only possible successor to Russell and it was sorely tempting to be part of his amazing new plans for the show. I will be there, glued to my TV when his stories begin in 2010."

"I feel very privileged to have been part of this incredible phenomenon, and whilst I'm looking forward to new challenges I know I'll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor."

Russell T Davies Executive Producer of "Doctor Who" comments "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left! After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching!"

"Doctor Who" returns to our screens on BBC this Christmas. "The Next Doctor" starring David Tennant, David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan will be screened on the 25th December on BBC1.

New Doctor Who Doctor
(1/6/09)(report by Dennis Blake):

It's official, the new Doctor is Matt Smith!

The actor is ironically best know for being the companion to Bille Piper's detective in her two mini-series last year, The Ruby In The Smoke and A Shadow From The North.

He's younger than Davison was when he took the part. Most of his UK credits haven't made it over here yet. Supposedly, he'll be in another Piper show, an upcoming episode of Secrets Of A Call Girl.

New Doctor Who Companion
(5/29/09)(report by Dennis Blake):

The BBC has announced that 21-year old Scottish actress Karen Gillian will be the new companion to new Doctor Matt Smith. She has very few film/TV credits, but did play one of the young ladies in The Fires Of Pompeii episode last year.

Also, the BBC continues to make major announcements just after I printed the (BTC) newsletter:

The BBC confirms they have begun talks with several companies for making a stand alone Doctor Who motion picture. No company names were made public, but one paper said all the contenders were British, not Hollywood.

David Tennant will appear in the 5th & 6th episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures as the Doctor breaks up her wedding.

BBC America will be the new home for Doctor Who, starting with the Easter special, Planet of the Dead in June or July.

Who Party 14 (in Toronto) has added director Colin Teague as a guest for the June 13th event. He was the first to direct Doctor Who + The Sarah Jane Adventures + Torchwood.

New Doctor Who Revealed
(7/20/09)(report by Dennis Blake):

The BBC has released 'official' photos of the new Doctor, Matt Smith, and his new companion, Karen Gillian as 'Amy Pond'; as filming has begun of series five.

Also, newspapers such as The Sun, show a new style Tardis. It seems a darker, richer blue; has sharp (not rounded by age) angles; and appears a bit taller.

The first episode being filmed features actress Alex Kingston, who played 'River Song' in season four.

Something must be wrong at BBC, they always seem to announce these things the Monday after I print the (Buffalo Time Council) newsletter, not the Monday before. Maybe, it's the new production team.
