As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By is a British sitcom that originally aired on British television between 1992 and 2002, and is now syndicated on a number of PBS stations here in the United States.

The premise of the sitcom: Two young lovers are separated by the Korean War. Their letters are lost and they each assume the other is not interested anymore. Thirty-eight years later, they accidentally meet and then renew their relationship.

The sitcom features 64 thirty-minute episodes, and a one-hour special.

When Lionel went off to fight in the Korean War, they lost touch when their letters to each other got lost in the mail. She was a nurse during that same war. She later met another man who she married, and the two had a daughter (Judy). Lionel Hardcastle Had a romantic relationship with Jean in the 1950's. When Lionel went off to fight in the Korean War, the two lost touch when their letters to each other got lost in the mail. After the war, Lionel went to Kenya to run a coffee plantation. He later met another woman whom he married. The two later divorced. At the beginning of As Time Goes By, Lionel is back in Britain and is writing a book about his experiences titled "My Life in Kenya". He needs a secretary to help him with the book, and he hires Judy not knowing she is Jean's daughter. Lionel and Judy start to casually date, and that is when Lionel finds out who Judy's mother is. Judith 'Judy' Hanson/Deacon The daughter of Jean, Judy has already been married once (the marriage ended in divorce - that's about all we know of it). At the beginning of As Time Goes By, Judy is helping Jean run the Type For You secretarial agency. Judy also doubles as a secretary, and that is how she met Lionel. Moira Brooker
Alistair Deacon Alistair runs a book publishing company that deals with lesser known authors, and Alistair has made a good deal of money from the book publishing business. When Lionel is writing his book, it is Alistair who accepts the book for publication. Philip Bretherton

Mrs. Bale Mrs. Bale is the housekeeper to Rocky and Madge, and is just as eccentric as Rocky and Madge are. Mrs. Bale has a habit of telling you to the minute when a meal will be served (for example, "Dinner will be served at exactly 6:14 PM"). 03 "The Copper Kettle" Lionel and Jean are friends again but are uneasy. They visit old haunts to see if that will help. However, their old haunts have changed.
04 "Surprise, Surprise" Lionel goes to Norwich, and an old girlfriend, for a lecture. Jean pays a surprise visit. However, not everything is as it seems.
05 "Relationships" With Jean angry at Lionel, Alistair shows his interest in Jean in a big way while Judy shows her interest in Lionel.
06 "The Picnic" The four go on a picnic where Lionel and Jean attempt to get Judy and Alistair interested in each other.

07 "White Hunter" Lionel doesn't like Alistair's idea for the photo for the cover of the book.
08 "A Weekend Away" Jean assumes Alistair and Judy are spending the weekend together when they both go away. Lionel wants to see Jean.
09 "Visiting Rocky" Jean and Lionel visit Lionel's rockin' dad Rocky in Hampshire who announces he is getting married again.
10 "Why?" Jean and Lionel shop for clothes for the upcomming book launch. Lionel wonders why Alistair is publishing Lionel's book.
11 "Misunderstandings" Jean tells her sister-in-law Penny she has only known Lionel a short while and that he is a psychiatrist. This sets up an amusing misunderstanding that will last for some time.
12 "The Cruise" Jean is offended when Lionel asks her to accompany him on a free promotional cruise for his book.
13 "The Book Signing" Alistair hires people to be at the book signing and starts a campaign about who is Lionel's "Pooh" while the girls try to get their friends to buy copies of the book.

On holiday in Paris, Lionel and Jean get involved in a young couples lover's tiff.

Wedding Day"
The wedding does not go entirely as planned. Jean is a bridesmaid and Lionel is best man.

But Where?"
Lionel and Jean decide to live together. However, on one hand, Jean thinks that Lionel is moving in with her. And Lionel, on the other hand, thinks that Jean is moving in with him.
17 "Covering Up" When Penny and her husband Stephen visit, Jean has to make a cover story because Jean and Lionel still haven't decided where to live.
18 "Moving In" Alistair and Sandy help Lionel move in with Jean. There are some adjustment problems.
19 "Branching Out" Judy and Sandy can't decide who should run the new branch of Jean's secretarial agency. Meanwhile, Lionel has a secret.
20 "The Mini Series" Jean hires Sally, a Yuppie woman, to run the new branch of the agency. A Los Angeles-based TV production company is interested in Lionel's book for a mini-series.

Sandy moves in with Lionel, Jean and Judy making Lionel wonder about the wisdom of his living there.
25 "Rewrites" Lionel has to spice up the script, but Gwen, the secretary Jean selects, is not very helpful.

Jean has to figure out how to get rid of talkitive Gwen without hurting her feelings.
27 "The Affair" Stephen is plotting a surprise anniversary party but Penny thinks he is having an affair and moves in with Jean.
28 "Welcome News" The mini-series is to be filmed at Rocky's house. Rocky "gives" the house to Lionel. Lionel proposes to Jean.

Party"
Jean accepts Lionel's proposal. Sandy and Judy have fallen out with their boyfriends. Stephen is still trying to plan the surprise party for Penny.
30 "Wedding
Preparations"
The wedding date has been set and preparations begun. The mini-series script is done.

Day Nerves"
Jean and Lional are nervous about their wedding. Penny's assistance doesn't help. Alistair helps smooth things out.

Romance"
Jean tries to accept Judy's new romantic interest but tends to make matters worse.
33 "Improvements?" Lionel and Jean don't like the "improvements" as filming commences on the mini-series, and they quarrel while discussing her retirement.

34 "The County Set" Staying at Rocky's house, Jean and Lionel are "adopted" by a snooty group which neither likes.
35 "Lionel's Ex-Wife" Lionel's ex-wife and her boyfriend are not what Jean expected. Come to think of it, they are not what Lionel expected either.

Hobby"
Lionel is bored so he tries to build a model ship while Alistair suggests he dramatize an obscure book.
37 "Avoiding The
County Set"
Lionel and Jean sneak into Rocky's house to avoid the snooty bunch and eventually put the snobs in their place much to the delight of the villagers who have been looked down upon by the snobs.
38 "Broadcast Plans" Lionel refuses to go the premier of the mini-series because of the changes so Alistair takes Judy and Sandy.
39 "At Death's Door" Penny overdramatizes her hospital visit assuming she is going to die. Everyone waits to see how the mini-series does.
40 "Showered With
Gifts"
Back at Rocky's, the villagers welcome Lionel and Jean and give them gifts because they put the snobs in their place.

41 "The Stalker" When Sandy is followed home, Lionel tries to protect everyone but Alistair's friend Nails takes care of it only to discover that the stalker is not what he appears.

Psychotherapist"
Jean brings work home upsetting Sandy and Judy. Jean sees a therapist because she is considering retiring.
43 "The Dinner Party" Jean and Lionel try to keep Penny from prying when she comes to dinner. Judy and Sandy have boyfriend problems.
44 "What's Wrong
With Mrs. Bale?"
At Rocky's, Mrs. Bale is acting odd. Only after Lionel gets sick is the reason figured out.

Engagement"
Back in London after a business trip, Alistair announces he is engaged to a woman named Mercury, which leads to much speculation. However, the whole thing is a ploy so Alistair can make Judy jealous.

Next Door"

Sandy dates Harry, the policeman called to check out a noise at the house next door. Penny has plans to buy the house next door, which makes Jean and Lionel uneasy. However, the house is bought by an "unknown" buyer who outbids Penny, much to the delight of Jean and Lionel.
47 "A Surprise
For Jean"
Springing a surprise trip to Barbados on the bored Jean turns out to be difficult.

48 "Pardon?" Everyone carefully tries to get Lionel to go see a hearing aid specialist while he thinks Jean needs glasses.
49 "An Old Flame" Jean is hesitant to meet an old boyfriend and Lionel is a little jealous. The old boyfriend turns out to be nothing to write home about.
50 "The New Neighbours" Jean can't curb her curiosity about the new neighbors. Sandy, Judy, Alistair and Harry go out on a double date.
51 "The Bypass" At Rocky's, Jean learns of a bypass that will affect the village. Assuming the villagers don't want it, she fights it until Lionel, having some inside information, informs her about what is really going on.
52 "Too Old
... Or Too Nosy?"
Penny and Stephen visit arriving separately - they fought over her wanting to be his receptionist. Sandy is angry at Harry.
53 "The Old Folks' Party" Jean helps an old folks home and decides to throw them a big party, volunteering everyone in the process. In the end, everybody has a good time.
54 "The Proposal" Jean intervenes forcing Sandy and Harry to make up. Alistair proposes to Judy. Judy leaves in a huff when she finds out why.

55 "A Deeply
Personal Problem"
The girls believe Jean's lie that Alistair came to visit because Lionel has a personal problem and nothing will convince them otherwise.
56 "Animal Magnetism" Sandy and Judy adopt the dog that follows Lionel around. They meet Harry when they report it to the police. Alistair dates Sandy, but in the end the two simply remain friends.
57 "The Bathroom" There is major embarassment when Lionel accidently sees Sandy in the bathroom. Jean prices adding another bathroom, but the whole thing gets out of hand.
58 "Surprising News" Sandy gets a mysterious package. Penny and Stephen, back from Spain, say they may retire there, but it's just talk.
59 "Future Imperfect" On Alistair's suggestion, Lionel decides to sell the country house to set up his retirement. Lionel's dad buys it back. Sandy stays at Alistair's after a party.
60 "Going Online" Jean wants to go on the Internet from her home computer. Alistair is broke, or almost. He and Judy make up. Harry breaks his leg and can't play in a sports tournament. He and Sandy go out.

Jean is still matchmaking. Harry is going to Canada for a year. Alistair finally gets his act together and Judy accepts his marriage proposal.

The wedding goes off without a hitch despite Rocky taking over when the best man breaks a leg. Jean's matchmaking for Harry and Sandy doesn't work.

Judy is gone and Jean is a little lonely. Jean takes in a homeless girl for a night. Harry finally asks Sandy to marry him and go to Canada. Sandy accepts while Alistair helps out with their last minute travel arrangements.

This is a one-hour special with Lionel and Jean discussing possible chapters for a new biography about their second life. He refuses to write it in the end.
