The Sinking of theTitanic

On the chilly, clear night of April 14,1912, the Titanic was going full speed across the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Most of its passangers were asleep in their rooms, or dining with friends in the elegant dining rooms. A few were on the deck of the ship, enjoying the view of the star filled sky. It was the two lookouts in the crowsnest who first spotted the gigantic iceberg coming closer. The captain was immediately allerted, but it was too late. The iceberg was straight ahead, and the ship was going too fast to make the turn. The iceberg grinded against the botton right side of the Titanic. Water poured into the opening of the ship, immediately filling the lowest floor. The watertight compartments were shut, but one too many compartments were underwater. It was a sure fact, the Titanic was going to sink.

Many of the passangers and crew had no idea what had happened. They carried on with whatever they were doing. One woman claimed she felt " a light shutter " under her feet. Because most people knew nothing about the iceberg, she was told it was just someone below her. Many people thought the iceberg was a joke. They laughed and threw pieces of ice at each other. The story was different for the third class passangers. Their rooms were located towards the lower parts of the ship. Water was pouring in towards them and they were told they were not allowed to leave their rooms.

By now, the crew knew what had happened. They told the passangers to dress warmly, put on their life jackets, and hurry to the deck of the ship. Panic was starting to break out among the passangers. They realized how much danger they were in. The Titanic was no longer "insinkable." The lifeboats were now being loaded. Only women and children were allowed to board. Families were ripped apart from each other, fathers could not go with their children and husbands could not go with their wives.

Around two o'clock in the morning, the Titanic sunk. 708 of 2227 people survived the sinking. Some people never knew if their friends had died or survived. No one would ever forget the devasting tradegy of the Titanic. No one would ever forget the people who lost their lives.
