MY NOTES

FROM THE AUDIO RECORDING CONTAINING DR. KEVIN JONES’ DNA SEMINAR AT THE 4TH UNION IN KINGSPORT, TN. ON 21 JUNE 2002

*Melungeons are a self-defining population.

*Brent collected many of the mtDNA samples. Others were sent in to the Doctor.

*Female lines done locally, compared to the worldwide gene data bank.

*There was a smaller sample of Y-Male DNA done.

*20,000 mtDNA data bank samples to compare with.

*4,500 Y-Male data bank samples to compare with.

*There were about 100 female line mtDNA samples tested.

*DATA INPUT SUGGESTS:

+African American component

+Native American component

+Eurasian component.

*THE EURASIAN COMPONENT DOMINATES:

+Eurasian 90% including about 7% north India, Turkish and Syrian

+Native American 5%

+African American 5%

*Melungeons reflect a Multi-Racial mixed ancestry. (Dr. Jones prefers that term, considering Tri-Racial as historically derogatory.)

*THE EXOTIC:

+4 sequences match Siddhi, which is predominant in northern India. These are of unquestionable Siddhi ancestry.

+2 sequences match Turkey.

+1 match for Syria.

*EXOTIC= 4 Siddhi and 2 Turkish plus 1 Syrian.

*MtDNA showed a wide genetic diversity.

*No inbreeding.

*More diversity than average European-Caucasian populations.

Y-MALE DNA (so far):

*Done from cheek swabs, and sent to London.

*Y-DNA is more specific than mtDNA.

*No definitive statements possible with such a small sample.

*Y-DNA also shows African American.

*And a hint of Native American.

*Multi-Racial ancestry in both male and female DNA lines.

*Great genetic diversity in Melungeons tested.

*SPECIFIC OF THE 20 MALE Y-DNA:

*They already show 7 different genetic types.

*Much diversity.

*Compared to 4,500 in the gene data bank, a couple of the males matched only one out of the 4,500 types, and that was Anatolian Turkey. Another matched one from an Arab population.

*Some Melungeon Y-DNA types matched NONE of the 4,500 in the gene data bank. That is both interesting and potentially significant.

*Melungeons are Multi-Racial, diverse, and not the classic Anglo-Irish, Northern European type.

*WHAT IS THE IMPACT?

*There is no specific Melungeon DNA gene sequence.

*Melungeons are multicultural based upon population.

*Melungeons are Self-Identified.

*It is not genetics that give you a Melungeon identity. It is cultural things.

(These are my personal notes that adhere very closely to what the doctor said, and the sequence in which he said them. Karlton Douglas 2002)
