Our D.U.I. program has been in place since 1994. We require all D.U.I.
offenders to attend the D.U.I. Safety School. The school is ran by Wade Prince
& Associates, LLC. We have an agreement with them
that they run the treatment end of the program while the probation department
handles the referrals and enforcement end of the program. Our D.U.I. safety
is school is somewhat different from most safety schools in the area. This
is in actually a low intensive outpatient treatment program.
All probationers undergo a drug and alcohol assessment to see if they
are chemically dependent and if so at what stage they are in their addiction.
Once they have been assessed, they are told how many classes to attend.
Generally speaking a first offense D.U.I. offender will complete a minimum
of eight classes. If the addiction is more progressed then they will attend
16 to 24 classes. If this is not sufficient then they will be recommended
for the appropriate treatment program.
In addition to attending the classes the probationers are also required
to complete a minimum of 50-100 AA/NA meetings. This is to insure that they
have a support system in place and to help them maintain abstinence.
The probation officers role in this treatment program is that of an
enforcement officer. The probation officer is responsible for administering
drug and alcohol screens to insure that the offender is not using mood
or mind altering substances. The officer also monitors the probationers
attendance in the classes and that the probationer is completing their
AA meetings. The probation officer is also responsible for handling any
problems that may arise during the classes. The probationer must show proof of attending AA meetings by filling
out an AA attendance sheet and having the chair of the AA meeting sign
that sheet.
Further offenders who have not complete high school or a GED must enroll in
an Adult Education program and work toward completing the GED program.
The Officer handling the DUI case load is Gregory Horton. He may be
