Cornbead Jewelry
These are first because they are VERY traditional. The beads that are from pale ivory to deep gray in color are called "corn beads", or sometimes "Cherokee Tears". In the 1830's, 16,000 Cherokees were forcibly moved from their ancestral land in the South to "Reserves" in Oklahoma. Only a feww acres were left for the People at what is now Cherokee, NC. On this trek, called the "Trail of Tears" or the "Trail Where We Cried", 4,000 men, women and children died of exposure, illness and malnutrition and were buried in shallow, unmarked graves on the side of the trail. Along the Trail grew plants that looked similar to corn and had a tear-shaped seed. The women used the seeds to make necklaces, etc, as they were the only thing available. I make these anywhere from choker length to 25". I can use any color pony bead or more than one color between the cornbeads. I frequently use the Cherokee clan colors, but any color is fine, and the beads will go with any color. They are made on an very nearly indestructable plasic cord. The Cherokee Clans and colors are: 1.AniSahoni, Blue Clan, color:blue; AniGilohi, Long Hair Clan, color: yellow; AniTsiskaw, Bird Clan, color purple; AniWodi Clan, Paint Clan, color:white; AniKawi, Deer Clan, color: brown; AniGatogewi, Wild Potato Clan, color, green; and Aniwaya, Wolf Clan, color: red. Hematite and Pewter Feather Necklace/Earrings
This is a very pretty necklace of hematite tubes, cathedral beads, and pewter feathers. It can be any length and is made on a sturdy necklace cord with matching earrings. This one is made with blue beads. the beads are sometimes hard to find, but I will make every effort to find the color you would like. This set is $30.00. |

I just learned to loom a few months ago. These are an effort to make, but well worth it! This set is a multicolor set in a Winnebago or Shoshone tribal design. Any 3-4 colors may be used.
