Grand Master (GM) Don Campbell. The inventer of Locking!!! Campbellock Dancing was created in the early 70's by Don Campbell in Los Angeles, California. Campbell, an art student, would get together with his friends every day in the cafeteria at Trade Tech college, where people would dance around a juke box to soul music.

At first, Campbell simply drew the dancers. Then, he began to learn some of their steps. Campbell would pause between moves to think of what he would do next, resulting in a more abrupt and "jerky" dance style. Don said he was trying to do the funky chicken. His friends called it "the lock," which became his signature move. Campbell's style of dance was so different than the smooth soul steps of his time that he was given the nickname "Don Campbellock."

As his dancing progressed, Don would dance with any prop he had at hand, such as his hat or handkerchief. He consistently returned to his signature "lock." Campbell originated several new moves within his "locking" style. The "Uncle Sam" was created when Don saw a friend of his in the crowd and pointed at the friend. Then he pointed at another friend, and so on. "Wrist Rolls," another part of today's locking vocabulary, were in Campbell's original dancing repertoire.

Eventually, Don created a group of dancers that he called "The Campbellock Dancers." The group was composed of: Don "Campbellock" Campbell, Greg "Campbellock Jr." Pope, James "the Original Skeeter Rabbit" Higgins, Leo "Fluky Luke" Williamson, Adolfo "Shabba-Doo" Quiones (O-zone from the Golan-Globus movies, "Breakin'" and "Breakin' 2: The Electric Boogaloo"), Toni "Ruby" Basil (world-reknowned choreographer; known for her hit 80's single, "Mickey"), Charles "Slim the Robot" Williams and Fred "Mr. Penguin" Barry.

Later, the Campbellock dancers were scouted to perform on Soul Train. The nation-wide exposure that Soul Train gave to locking was unheard of, at that time. Most forms of dance were highly regional (i.e. what was danced in NYC stayed in NYC). Locking became a dance craze that exploded among the urban African American demographic.

Network TV began calling the Campbellock dancers "the Lockers," a more easily remembered and pronounced name. Their television appearances included the Carrol Burnette Show, Soul Train, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, 90-minutse Live on CBS, and their own Saturday morning cartoon special on NBC! We meet Don in NYC winter of 2004 and have been good friends ever since.

Grand Master (GM) Mr. Wave/The Boogie Knight, aka Lord Utmost A. EL. GM Priest and Professor met Mr. Wave over 12 years ago. We've met as Moorish brothers and have been great friends ever since. We've had long extensive coversations about the history of HipHop Dance, the various styles, and thier origins! Utmost, please give us your version of history; we really appreciate the clarity!

Contrary to popular belief hip hop did not begin on the west coast it did in fact begin on the east coast in the streets of NY! Thats right I said it and will back it up with fact. Going all the way back to the Streets of NY 1920's!!!!!!

Follow me and I will show you who I am and where it all begins. I am Lord Utmost Amor EL that is my righteous and only legal name to which I will allow any to know me by. Throughout my career I have been known by many hip hop names. My first was boo boo boogie, then I became Boo Boogie but because of my mother who was known and still known as Mrs. Wiggins. People who know her started calling me Wiggy Wiggy & Mr. Wiggles. I lost that name in a battle and took the name Mr. Wave. Later realizing that 1) too many people wanted that name and 2) that my style was more then that I changed my name finally to The Boogie Knight. The Boogie Knight was my last and final name. And will be the final name that I will now use even though many still like to call me Mr. Wave. Now let explore some serious information and my version of Hip Hop history.

My mother and father were dancers who combined ballet, African dance and Electric Boogie (locking, Popping and breaking) that's right my mother and father were hip hop originators and I learned as a baby. My parent's teacher was Earl Tucker who performed Hip Hop in the 1920s performing all over the streets of New York!!! You can still see posters of him at the cotton club in New York doing the wave, doing the snake and doing the Egyptian (now called the Tut) So understand when I say Hip Hop began in New York in the 1920s I can prove it for it is in my Hip Hop lineage. Earl Tucker was known as Snake Hips (the originator of hip hop names for hip hop dancers) he was the first to perform the movements of the snake, wave and King Tut. Because of his performances all over New York many choreographers had kept his movements in their minds. Many of the great movie choreographers went to the cotton Club in New York where Earl Tucker had performed many times. (His movements are seen in movies like Sinbad, chitty chitty bang bang, and old Danny Kaye movies among others) but these weren't my only teachers my best friend who would spend most of his time with me dancing with my family for that's all we did was dance and eat would also show me magic and he began to teach me. He was known as Jockomoe the electric illusionist. (He took this name from the 1956 movie The Court Jester) He would use the movements he learned from my parents and perform magic while dancing, that was his hook, and since the dancing was different then anything anybody else was doing combined with his dexterity he was unbelievable, I became his student as well.

We were dancing hip hop long before Hip Hop existed. We were dancing to the Temptations and Delfonics, Gladys Knight, and all the soul classics.

I remember going with Jockomoe to the black panthers on 121st and 7th avenue and we were learning more dance moves there to combine with what we were doing. There was a group that went to the Gong show they were all black panthers this was late 60's early 70's they were forced to use a name different then what they had on their jackets but they were performing hip hop electric boogie style baby, representing New York on the Gong show.

We were known as Inner City Unity (ICU) which is where you would end up if you tried to out dance us. We later created a satellite group called Inner City Breakers. We were the Semi First Hip Hop Dance Crew In New York (the Black Messengers the group from Black Panthers may have formed before us I'm not sure on that) However, I do know that The Rock Steady Crew a breaking crew didn't come together till the late 70's.

To this day I still follow the teachings of the infamous incomparable Jockomoe king of the mystical electric illusionists. And I will always keep his identity secret but I will tell all there is to know about me. Every Member of the ICU became Grand Masters of the Martial Arts. We all had black belts in the late 60's and 70's and combined that along with magic and Acrobatics to our dance it gave us a style and grace that couldn't be touched. It was the Kung Fu Fighting Era. Performing capoeira in New York Streets, what is that capoeira, if it isn't breaking, think about it?

In the Late 60's 68 or 69 there was the Zulu kings before they became Zulu nation they were winning talent shows and contests. (This is why almost all hip poppers from NY belonged to Zulu nation including all of the original Rock Steady Crew) At the same time when soul train showed Shabba Doo on the west coast we had the Harlem pop lockers here on the east coast. Up rocking was being done in Brooklyn in the late 60's.

While everybody may have their own version of history/His Story; My Story can be proven. I hold My story to be truth even though My Story may also be called his-story/mystery; The only thing I can say is Jockomoe is real, I am real, my parents are real, Earl Tucker is real and my boogie well lets just say The Boogie Knight is a Capricorn. Wiggy Wiggy Baby.

Grand Master (GM) FX, aka Shawn Johnston, born; Honolulu, Hawaii march 20 1963 home; Kansas City been dancing 26 yrs. poppin and electric boogaloo. So FX tell us how it all started? When I was 12 I saw a commercial with sombody doing the robot. I said to myself I can do that and just did it (1975). soon after that friends of mine started showing me different dances. In 1980 is when I first encountered poppin and boogaloo. Did some battling on the east coast, overseas (Europe), and Jamaica in the 80s while in the Navy. Gave my life to Jesus Christ in 1991, so the club scene was out and things slowed down, but I always kept up my skills. got married in 1996 and began to raise a family. My son is getting very good, he's 7. I head up the drama team in my church,(Praise Chapel), and have done a few dramas with popping in them, but it wasn't until a few years ago when our church did this big city-wide gig called "Lay it Down",( available on dvd), that I found out that people were coming to see the drama just to check out "FX". They came to see the dancer but ended up getting there life changed through the gospel message in the drama. It was then I knew that the lord gave me the ability to dance to get people to hear about the life changing gospel of Jesus Christ. Since then I've been practicing harder than ever with a purpose, and hittin' the streets to spread the good news. There's alot of hurting people out there that need to be reached! Peace-Out FX. We met FX in Kansas City, Missouri, we were sitting in the stairway BOTB 2005. It must have been 200 degrees...
