Each event begins with a preliminary round of heats. In events that are 200m or shorter, the 16 fastest swimmers from the preliminaries advance to the semifinals, which are held in the evening on the same day. The eight fastest swimmers from the semifinals advance to the finals which are held the following evening.

In events that are 400m and longer (including relays), the 8 fastest swimmers (or teams) from the preliminaries advance directly to the final. Finals are usually held on the same evening as the preliminaries, except the 1500m freestyle; the final is conducted the following evening.
