May 12, 1980 - Jane Pauly interviews Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.
Jane: It's coming, folks. You've been waiting three years, I should think. The long awaited and long anticipated sequel to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

[a clip from the battle of Hoth shows. After the clip, the camera goes to Mark and Harrison, sitting next to each other across from Jane.]

Jane: Mark Hamill is back as Luke Skywalker. Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo. And needless to say, Darth Vader is back, waging more star wars against the rebels of long, long ago.

Harrison: We begin the second one with yet another conflict with the Empire. But the story is really not so much about those conflicts in the second one as it is about the characters. [camera zooms in on Harrison] There's more complications with the characters in the second picture.

Mark: In 1976, I signed a contract for three films. And those three films would tell the complete story. So what we have in the Empire Strikes Back is the second act. And all the problems in the second act, that is you can forward the story line, but you really can't solve all of the loose ends, so to speak.

Jane: So what was the talk of, I can remember three years ago with Star Wars when we were anticipating more and more things to come. Not a sequel, but a prequel....? [points to Mark]

Mark: The next trilogy, after the next film, will go twenty years earlier and tell of the young Alec Guinness character and how Darth Vader came to power. And then we wouldn't be involved in those [points to Harrison and himself] because our characters were just little kids.

Jane: So this is it for you guys?

Mark: ummm ...

Harrison: The third one.

Mark: The third one.

Jane: The third one will be

Harrison: ... which we haven't made yet.

Jane: Alright. Well good. We've got another clip. I want to show you as much of the movie as we can get away with without charging you five dollars a cracker.

[Harrison and Mark laugh. A clip of Han landing on Bespin and talking to Lando shows.]

Jane: Is this as good as the first?

Mark: I'm mostly excited because you see a real growth in the characters. I chose to play Luke in the first one in a specific, very innocent, very young style so that there would be a contrast. And I really feel that my character's paying off now. And you'll see a difference in the characters in the third one because there is a progression.
