Listen To The Audio Clip

The summer of 1992 was a time of transistion for Patty. Her Up Against My Heart album was a critical success, but with the exception of the first release, "Hurt Me Bad (In A Real Good Way)", the singles that her record company, MCA, had selected to release weren't exactly burning up the record charts. There were several reasons for this, but Patty was not very pleased with her situation at the label.

There were several planned projects that Patty was pursuing, one of which was a full, duet album with her friend and labelmate, Vince Gill. In addition, the fourth and final single planned for the album was being decided on. In August, Patty appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, and in her two song set, the first she performed was her then current release, "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You". The second song she performed, which we are sharing with you here, was widely speculated to be her next single.

Waitin' On The Phone To Ring is a fast "radio song" that would have been a strong hit for her on the country charts. With the background vocals of Dolly Parton, and the trend of music on the charts at the time, it was well suited to be the final single from her album. In this live performance at the Opry, Patty's longtime band member, Carmella Ramsey, sings the background vocals plus puts in a great peformance on the fiddle.

However, with the situation with her record company at wits end and her release from her recording contract, this and other projects planned never came to be. Patty's new home would be Sony/Epic records, a label with a lot of talented artists but lacked a strong, female, country vocalist. Here is where Patty hoped to find her niche.

The rest, as they say... is history.

Waitin' On The Phone To Ring
(Tassi/Tassi)

How many nights you cried
So sad and lonely
Wondering if you'll call
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring

He said his love was true
You want to believe him
You're out there on a limb
Waitin for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring

How can you love a man
When he holds you like dirt
In the palm of his hand
His kind will always stray
Like that dirt
He'll throw you away

Another night goes by
He's not there to hold you
You sit there like a fool
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring, now baby
Waitin' for the phone to ring

How can you love a man
When he holds you like dirt
In the palm of his hand
His kind will always stray
Like that dirt
He'll throw you away

Another night goes by
He's not there to hold you
You sit there like a fool
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring, now baby
Waitin' for the phone to ring
Waitin' for the phone to ring
