She was born June 28, 1822 in Rutherford County, N.C., and died June 20, 1874 in Mart, McLennan County, Texas.

Notes for JONATHAN CALHOUN WHITESIDE:

Don Whiteside has the son of Thomas Whiteside and Rachel Hemphill as

Jonathan L. Whiteside, borth 1821 and married first to M. Logan and then

to Nancy Ledbetter.

The Hemphill - McEntire - Greenlee Families shows Nancy Ledbetter married

to a Jonathan Whiteside as a second wife, born 7/20/1826 and we don't

know when she died.

The Hemphill book also shows Jonathan CALHOUN Whiteside as the son of

Thomas Whiteside and Rachel Hemphill, born Oct 24, 1828. It shows that

he had two wives, Vina Henson and Amanda M. Hemphill, born June 28, 1822,

with no mention of M. Logan or Nancy Ledbetter.

Also, is it reasonable that Amanda M. Hemphill died in Texas in 1874, but

Jonathan

married Nancy Ledbetter in NC in 1863 only to die later himself in Texas?

Who has attach the wrong Jonathan to Thomas and Rachel? There are many

discrepancies between Don's list of children for Thomas and Rachel and

the other source.

.

Some thoughts on the subject:

John's children broke into 3 camps -- those marrying Ledbetters & Lewis's

(who stayed in NC) and those marrying Hemphill's (who moved to Alabama).

The Hemphill Whitesides were Thomas, Moses, and John Underwood.

Moses seems to have moved to Alabama around 1835 after his oldest married

and stayed in NC. James M went on to Arkansas and to Texas, but the

rest, being mainly girls, seem to have stayed in Alabama. More research

on the husbands would be required to say for sure. Just an aside, his

oldest daughter married a Penland and I think stayed in NC. His second

oldest did as well. But when her husband died, she married a Ledbetter

IN ALABAMA. Now maybe he joined her there so she could be with her

parents. They would have know each other all of their lives.

Thomas & wife Rachel died young, when only half the children were grown.

Andrew Marion, William Lamar Decatur, and Jonathan C went to Arkansas

with their first cousin, Moses son, James M. Whiteside and the Kerr

family. Land records show a Jonathan "C", not "L", which would support

the Hemphill version. Plus, it would make more sense that a Hemphill

wife stayed with the Hemphill clan and a Ledbetter wife stayed with a

Ledbetter clan. Oliver Decatur, a son of some Jonathan, married a Teague

in Alabama and bought land in Arkansas near Jonathan C, Andrew Marion,

and William, which would seem more likely that he is the grandson of

Thomas.

John Underwood's family moved to Alabama sometime before 1847. He has a

son named Jonathan Leander and a son names John Adolphus. I once thought

that no one would have two children with such similar first names, but I

have since seen John and Jonathan frequently in the same household, so no

problem there. Both boys married Teagues. The only oddball in this

bunch is James McIntyre who supposedly married an Ursula Elizabeth

Whiteside (unknown parents) in NC in 1851, after his family moved to

Alabama. James M. was the youngest, and I can't imagine that NC held

strong attachment for him. Maybe an unidentified visiting relative came

and swept him off his feet?? or he doesn't belong. It looks like these

folks stayed in Alabama like most of Moses' children.
