Make a Difference… Volunteer!
The past two weekends have been great
for adoptions. We had 5 dogs and 2 kittens adopted! Thanks to all
the volunteers that assisted with the adoptions and the Bike Race
last weekend. It was a big success and raised a lot of money for
the shelter. Things have calmed down somewhat at the shelter as
far as having animals just busting out of the seams. We are still
overcrowded but we at least have enough space to spread the
animals out and can focus more time on the adult dogs too now. All
but 1 of Ms. Piggy's pups have been adopted and all but 2 of the
Australian Shepherd puppies have been adopted, but all 3 are in
foster care. We have a LOT of animals currently going through
heartworm treatment which is expensive and time consuming for the
staff as they are must remain completely inactive and walked on a
leash multiple times a day, but thankfully at least one large
group of them should be finished in the next month or so.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR
ADOPTION DAY IN SEPTEMBER! Setup is at
9am, events run from 10am - 4pm.
A Home for the Holidays
We are starting the work preparing for our large adoption and
fundraising event on November 4th in Oakland in front of Kroger
(H64 & H194). If you can help with the planning & preparation
please let me know ASAP. The more help we have and the more we do
early the less the burden on us all right before the event. This
is a BIG event for us! If you live in Fayette County and have not
volunteered much due to the distance to Petco / Petsmart or other
events please consider signing up for this one!
Shelter Work
We have some plans put together to move some kennels
around and make some larger play yards. I don't have a date yet
but we really need 6-10 men (or strong women) that can help move
the kennels and fencing around to make some LARGE! play yards for
the dogs. If you can help please send me a note with the days over
the next month that you are available, either evening or weekend.
If we get enough people then it won't be too overwhelming a task
and the dogs are going to benefit immensely from this redesign!
Donation Containers
Jessica has been nice enough to purchase and put
together some of those donation tubes that we can put out in
businesses in the local community to raise much needed funds
for the shelter. If you have any contacts with any
businesses that would let us put our donation containers in
their store please send me the company name, address and
contact information. And a huge thank you to Jessica for
doing these for us!
If you are
interested in volunteering please email Laurie at

Our Rescues
New Arrivals
Diva is a female rottweiler mix
that had puppies recently and was rescued last week. She had to
have emergency surgery as she was very near death but although
she is heartworm positive she appears to be doing okay now. For
those of you that remember Natalie, Diva had pymetra, to give
you an idea of how serious her problems were (for those of you
that don't know Natalie, she passed away 5 days after we rescued
her and her 7 puppies and then bottle fed her babies).
Stinger is an 11 week old puppy
that was seized in a cruelty investigation. She has mange, an
injured leg and was very skinny and absolutely terrified. On a
scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest score for body weight,
she was given a 1 by the vet. We will be returning to the home
to continue to the investigation and plan on filing animal
cruelty charges against the owner.
Adoptions
Delilia was adopted yesterday!
Delilia was a 4 year old black lab that we've had at the shelter
for a year and a half. Once again our wonderful foster mom
Bonnie took her into her home and worked her magic and yesterday
Delilia found herself a forever home!
Also Bonnie, our foster mom decided
to adopt her calico foster cat Abigail! And one of the torti
kittens was adopted yesterday that Kim is fostering. (Sorry, I
know NOTHING about cats or I would try to tell you more about them
:)
Our gorgeous, LOUD, Fleta-bug was
adopted yesterday. We just gained custody from the animal cruelty
prosecution about a week ago and she has already found her forever
home. Evidently the entire family came out to make the decision so
I think that Fleta will have a bunch of fun at her new home.
Our beautiful Valerie found a home
last Saturday! She was one of the 2 remaining puppies from the
litter of 12 that Ms. Piggy had at the shelter. We received a call
Friday from a family that had previously adopted from us. Their
dog had recently passed away and they wanted to find another
wonderful rescue for their family. They came down Saturday and
spent HOURS trying to decide between Cinderella (Junkyard) and
Valerie. They finally decided on Valerie and she is now in a
wonderful happy home.
Imogene, one of the gorgeous grey
kittens that Yvette has been fostering was adopted last weekend.
There are 3 of these left... if you haven't seen them, they are
truly beautiful. Look like Russian Blue's.
Dante, one of the 2 australian
shepherd puppies that broke with mange again last month was
adopted. He is still on medicine for a month which his new mom
will give him. His sister, Anna, is in a new foster home. His
foster mom is the lady who adopted Troy a few months back (one of
the other australian shepherd pups but different litter, the one
with Cassandra, Athena, etc.).
Lancelot, one of the 13 mangy
australian shepherd puppies was adopted last weekend to a
wonderful family. Although his foster mom Christy is going to miss
him terribly, she found him a terrific family to call his own.
Below is a response that Christy received that night:
"We wanted to send a short note with
pictures to let you know that Lance is doing very well. He has
enjoyed a bath, a nap and a walk this afternoon. He has eaten half
of his dinner. He has already gone to the restroom three times
outside. :-)
We placed the crate in our bedroom by the window I think he knows
that this is "his spot" as he has taken an Elmo and a Zoe doll in
there to sleep with him. (along with his monkey).
We appreciate so much you being his caregiver over the last 3
months. What a blessing it is that he was rescued by the FCAR and
placed in your loving home during this crucial time in his young
life.
We look forward to corresponding with you on how he is growing and
changing. Please feel free to visit him anytime.
Thank you again for volunteering your home and your heart with our
new puppy!
Chris, Heather, Peyton, Hadley, Cherry, Penny, and Lancelot
Miller"
