Make a Difference… Volunteer!

Well, I was supposed to be cleaning my house so instead I made this ‘prettier’ version of our volunteer updates and event scheduling email. I know that some of you enjoy hearing what is going on at the shelter when you can’t get to events each week so I’ll try to at least give you the highlights. If it is more than you want to read, skip to the second page where it lists all of our upcoming events on the left side click here to view the Event Volunteer Schedule.

We are all very excited about our 2006 event schedule. We have some new events planned that we hope will not only be successful, but a lot of fun as well. We are trying to plan ahead for all of our events so if you can volunteer to help with the coordination we could really use your assistance. We are trying to identify tasks that can be done at home or on the weekends / evenings. Let us know what you are interested in doing and we’ll find a match for you.

We are focusing a lot of attention on shelter improvements right now. If you are handy or know someone that is willing to help, or if you know of any business willing to donate materials, please let us know.

Our Rescues

New Arrivals

Five of the seven Australian Shepherd puppies have been spayed/neutered and are ready for adoption. Their mom, Jimmy, is heartworm positive so she will be treated once she is healthy enough. She has a very sweet personality and the puppies are all becoming more outgoing every day. This is a picture of them from one of the first days after we got them… they would not even come out of the dog house.

Adoptions
None this week…

Just Cute…
This is a picture of Tuff & Avery at the shelter. Avery has been adopted but we took this right before she was picked up.

Shelter Updates

  • Chloe, a newly returned boxer mix, likes to play ball but if there is no one to play with she will through the ball up in the air and play by herself!

  • Gilbert is at Dogwoods for 2 more weeks of doggy boot camp. Rocket & Ivy’s graduation from basic obedience class is in 2 weeks.

Kong / Nylabone Update
We have raised almost $200 that we will be using to purchase Kongs and Nylabones for our rescues. We will be placing the order February 1st so if you are interested in donating please mail your check to the shelter and mark KONGS in the Notes section. We also placed an ad in the Fayette Falcon requesting donations for this purpose. We need about $150 to purchase a Kong for every dog and we are still waiting on pricing from Nylabone but it will cost at least $150 for those as well. Thank you all for your generosity!

Events
We added a play day for Saturday, February 4th… we might do some work around the shelter too if people are interested… work or play, let us know.

We need a LOT more help for the Midsouth Boat Show, February 17-19th… please let Laurie know if you can help by working a shift.

Also, mark your calendars for February 25th. We have a regular adoption day scheduled at Petco Germantown and also plan on walking some of our rescues in the Germantown Mardi Gras Parade with “Adopt Me” jackets. The parade starts at 1pm. If you are interested in walking a dog for us, let Laurie know as we have to register them ahead of time and know how many to bring.
NOTE: Children can attend with you but you must be >18 years old to walk a dog.

Please check the schedule in the left border for all events and let Laurie know which events you can help with. If you cannot make your scheduled event please let us know ahead of time so that we can find a replacement.

Monty

Monty is another new addition. He is a German Shepherd mix and is 14 weeks old.  His leg is in a splint to attempt to straighten his leg, which is deformed from malnutrition.  He also had scabies, coccidia, round worms and hook worms.  He was seized in a cruelty investigation on December 29th and is making great strides in his recovery.
