American Indian Carvings

by

Gene Graham

After I felt that I had learned enough about carving faces by doing woodspirits, I decided to try my first American Indian. I probably should have carved a few more woodspirits. My first attempt was, at best, poor. There were a lot more features to carve, such as the mouth, chin, neck, etc., that are hidden behind the hair on a woodspirit.

The American Indian is an interesting subject to carve and is what I carve most. The differences in their cultures and dress make them a very diverse subject.

I also have an interest in hunting arrowheads. To find a point that I am probably the first person to see since it was lost thousands of years ago fascinates me. Some of these handcrafted tools are up to 12,000 years old.

Carving the American Indian brings these two hobbies together.

I hope you enjoy these carvings.
