Every caver - no matter if you are a "Beginner" caver or a "BNC" will need gear from time to time! Below is a list of links that contain everything from cave gear to survey information. Check them out for your caving needs. Always seek the proper gear and training before going in a cave!
Beginning Caving
If you want to learn more about caving might want to consider joining the NSS and one of the local grottos. Since the equipment needed for safe caving varies from area to area. It is your responsibility to contact a local caver to find out if you will need more than the basics.
Basic Caving Equipment
Helmet - A hard hat with a chin strap and mounted with a primary source of light is recommended. (Hard hats be UIAA approved)
Back-Up Light - For safe caving two sources of back up light with spare part (batteries, bulbs, carbide etc)should be carried in your pack.
Footwear - Good sturdy hiking or work boots with non-slip lug soles and ankle support.
Clothing - Average caves temperatures in our area average 56 degrees. It not a bad idea to wear extra layers for added warmth.
Gloves - Protective gloves to protect your hands from cuts.
Cave Pack - To carry extra equipment( food, water, flashlights, batteries, trash bags, carbide, extra clothing, first aid kit) is strongly advise.
Knee Pads -(Optional)But keep in mind that a lot of crawling can put the hurts on your knees!
Food - Carry plenty of high energy foods along that will last the entire trip. Don't forget plenty of water.
Trash Bag - A trash bag can provide warmth should an emergency arise, be handy for carring trash out of the cave and is great to put muddy caves clothes in after the trip.
