Simon Drew Davis


Simon Drew K. Davis was married to Susannah Hamrick on August 10,1853 in Cleveland County, NC. A record of Simon and Susannah's marriage can be found in a book in the Cleveland County Public Library titled "Cleveland County, North Carolina Marriages-1851-1868" compiled by S. Arnold Ramey. His second wife was Sarah (Sally) Cogdill. They were married in 1869. Simon is listed in the Cleveland County Federal Census for 1860 on page # 347. In 1860, in Cleveland County, NC, he owned real estate worth $400.00 and personal property worth $100.00. Simon Drew K. Davis was a Civil War veteran. In the Civil War, he was a 4th Corporal in the Sandy Run Yellow Jackets from Cleveland County, NC. Jim McDonald has a picture of Simon Drew K. Davis that he obtained from Samantha (Manty) Davis Gregory about 1980. Manty was Simon's granddaughter by William Monroe Davis, Simon's son by Susannah Hamrick. The picture shows Simon Davis in his Civil War uniform holding his weapon, which looks like a rifle with a pistol-type cylinder. Simon was shot through the knee and lost a leg at the battle of Frayser's Farm in Virginia during the Seven Days Battle in 1862. Simon Drew Davis was sent home to North Carolina to be with his family and to again take up the trade which had made his living. S.D. Davis was a cabinetmaker. He is listed in the 1870 Census for Cleveland County, NC. Sometime after 1870, he and Sally sold their farm in Cleveland County, NC and moved to Swain County, NC. Simon is listed in Swain County Census for 1880 in Nantahala Township. He is also listed in Swain County, NC Census for 1900 in Nantahala Township. Please take note: check Mormon Records CJCLDS #7721728-57 for Simon Davis. Simon D. Davis died in 1914 and was buried in the Davis Family Cemetery in Swain County, NC about four miles beyond Bryson City toward Murphy, NC. Although he qualifies for a marker from the U.S.A., Simon's grave is unmarked. Jim McDonald
