Magic Eyes

Ever since he was about 4 years old, Cody has told me that he has special powers. (smile) At first, it was cute and I thought he was referring to a cartoon he watched called Captain Planet and the Planeteers. You see, each Planeteer had a ring with a different colored stone. . and each ring would put out a ray of colored light as they summoned Captain Planet. Well, Cody used to say he was a Planeteer and could make colored light come out of his eyes. . . . .

Well, as he grew older. . every once in awhile, he would mention this colored light in different capacities. But it wasn't until a month or so ago that I realized what he was talking about.

He had gotten pretty quiet one evening. . . and come to think of it, had been quiet all week long. As he was getting ready for bed. . he pulled my arm to get my attention, but when I looked down, he was not looking at me. His eyes were directed towards the recliner chair in his room. I asked him what he needed, and very softly he asked me if I could see those pink lights he was making on that blue chair. (smile - you probably by now are realizing the same thing I was realizing) I looked at the chair, and smiled, and looked back at him. He drug his eyes away to direct them towards me. . with big questions in them. I told him no, I did not see the pink lights he was making.

And then, very softly. . . even softer than before, he told me that he had special powers.

Well, of course, it was one of those moments when you fight against the love, humor and total happiness to keep these emotions from bubbling right out of you. I smiled at him in wonder, with my eyes big and my mouth forming the WOW his discovery and announcement deserved. I told him in a confidential whisper that I TOO had those same special powers.

He looked a little unbelievingly so at me. . . in part because I don't think he expected ME to believe him and in part because I think he thought there might be something wrong with him. . . in that he could see these lights. I then went on to tell him that ever since I was a little girl . . . when I looked at things, sometimes I would see different shaped and different colored lights. . and that these lights would float or move. . following wherever I moved my eyes.

Of course. . HIS eyes were huge by now. . . as I was describing EXACTLY what he was experiencing.

I then told him to try something with me. I said, let's look up into the light on your ceiling fan for a few seconds and then we will close our eyes at the same time and trap the light behind our eyelids. We did this. And with our eyes closed I asked him did he see three bright yellow lights and of course he said yes. Then I told him to open his eyes and look at the blue chair. I asked him to tell me what he saw.

Well, it was fun. And of course, Tyler tried, and COULD see the lights inside of his eyes, but not on anything else. lol I told Cody that EVERYONE had this special power, just some people never SEE the lights. He wasn't quite ready to accept that EVERYONE could do this . . . he sort of liked it that he and I were special in this way. . . so I didn't push it. It was just too sweet. And very nice to see him feeling GOOD about the whole thing rather than worried about it.

A child. So much like his mommy.
A heartwarming thought in one respect. A HUGE responsibility in another.
