The Gift of Ponderance

WARNING: Thought is Required!

This page was created from my compulsion for expressive writing. The words, thoughts and feelings shared here are a large part of who I am.

Recently, it was brought to my attention that I might be running away from certain issues. Faced with this accusation, I must admit, I felt a sense of familiarity, and hence, a purpose to ponder. In mental struggle over this quest for truth, I penned the following poem:

"A Question" by Dawn M. Jones

One simple question
Keeping constant vigil
Drifting on the acrid fog of my mind.

Swirling round and round
Creating gut wrenching imprints
Weaving hypnotic whispers
That seduce my SOUL.

How does one know
How can one tell
What deciding element
Sets doubt's prisoner free?

Oh please, I pray of you
Answer me this question
Am I running from
Or running to?

For days I pondered this dilemma, until one evening I posed the question to my two sons, ages six and seven. As I was tucking them into bed, I asked them to imagine a huge, monstrous bear before them. I asked them, if faced with a real-life bear and the choice of running, would they run FROM the bear or run TO safety.

Cody, my eldest quickly responded that he would surely run TO safety. On the other hand, Tyler was sure that he would run AWAY from the bear.

And as simple as that, I had my answer.

You can't do one without accomplishing the other. No matter what or who we may be running from, we are also running TO something or someone. The act remains constant. The outcome, however, is totally dependent upon where we choose to place our focus.

When we concentrate on running "from". . . where we end up is secondary in priority, and therefore, we often find ourselves in "places" not of our choosing. On the other hand, if we focus on "running to", we stand a much greater chance of ending up where we want to be.

What do YOU think? *grin*
