William Douglas Metzgar was the father of Producer Robert Metzgar. W. D. Metzgar as he was known to his friends was the tent manager for faith evangelist, Jack Coe during the time Robert was born. Reverend Metzgar traveled with Revivalist Jack Coe, setting up tent revivals and missionary crusades during the early 50's and served as Pastor of the Jack Coe Revival Center. Jack Coe established an orphanage during his ministry for abused and battered children. W. D. Metzgar was an accomplished banjo and guitar player. Janie West Metzgar was a singer and songwriter of such famous songs as Jesus Breaks Every Fetter, Camp Meeting Revival, and other songs first published in the Jack Coe Hymn Book in 1948 as spiritual songs and poems and later published in 1952 by Broadman Press in Nashville, Tennessee by the Southern Baptist Publishing board.

Assemblies of God Ministers

W. D. Metzgar and his wife Janie became Assemblies of God ministers through the ministry of Robert Hankins. He was the evangelist that had led Robert's parents into an experience of salvation in a revival held in a one room school house in Freestone County Texas. Robert Hankins son, Billy Bob Hankins is an Assemblies of God pastor and his grandson is a missionary.

W. D. Metzgar was an accomplished musician, although he rarely played in public. Reverend Metzgar as an Assemblies of God minister served as the Foreign Missions Director for the West Texas Assemblies of God churches while he was pastoring the First Assembly of God church in Midland, Texas. He also served on the Foreign Missions Board in Springfield, Missouri for the General Council of the Assemblies of God. Robert's father taught him the first chords he ever learned on the guitar. His mother taught him piano, songwriting, and production skills.

Janie Metzgar was an accomplished singer and piano player. Janie and her brother Archie, were raised in the Buckner's Baptist Orphanage and Janie graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was a schoolteacher, homemaker, missionary, counselor, and minister to the hurting her entire life. Later in life, Janie found her real family and was reunited with her roots prior to her death in San Angelo, Texas where Reverend & Mrs. Metzgar were pastoring.

Janie Metzgar was a very powerful spiritual and musical influence in Robert's early life. "I loved my mother deeply," Robert Metzgar said in an interview with Country Parade Magazine. She was truly a Saint, if there ever was one. She bound our family together in prayer, while dad traveled in evangelism. There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss her. "She left a hole in my heart the day she died, that will never be filled". My mother died from an extended battle with breast cancer. She died on the same day as Elvis Presley on August 16th, 1977 in the hospital in San Angelo, Texas. Janie West Metzgar was a valiant warrior to the end of her life, never complaining even though she was in tremendous pain for those last agonizing weeks. She never thought about herself right to the end of her life and left this world with the words of her song, "Where The Roses Never Fade" on her lips. I miss you and love you so much Janie. You are in a better place where the Heavenly choir is rejoicing and singing the greatest Gospel music of all!"

From an early age (twelve years old), Robert worked in the ministry with founder of Youth With A Mission, Loren Cunningham. He spent many years in service to the Assemblies of God church working in Latin America, Central America, Africa, and Europe alongside Missionaries Walter and Elsie Kornelsen. Missionary evangelist Watson Argue, Tom Cunningham of the Southern California District of the Assemblies of God, Verna Hodge, daughter of missionary Harry Hodge, and Tommy Barnett of Phoenix, Arizona had a great spiritual affect on my life. Robert lived a life of complete dedication to the missionary ministry. Prior to moving to Nashville, Robert Metzgar was involved with the ministry of Teen Challenge founder David Wilkerson, who authored the, "Cross & Switchblade," best selling book. It was during the time Robert slept out under the stars (with his guitar) during his teenage years in many foreign countries around the world, that he penned many of the greatest songs in his ASCAP publishing catalog that are recorded today.
