it struck me as rather strange, then. I remember Wind Chill 5's, and I remember walking in "The Woods" well after 9:00
pm, still with daylight. I remember fishing off of the breakwater and trying to climb Indian Head. I remember
Stephenville Baptist Church, the Teen Club, the bowling alley and playing soccer in Deer Park and having the Deer Park
"cheerleaders" throw rocks at us. I remember the "Paradise of the North".

comments = I wasn't PCS to Harmon, but spent a lot of time there TDY. I was a KC-97 pilot and we reflexed from
Hunter AFB, Savannah, Ga on a regular basis in 1959, 60 and 61. This was to provide air refueling support to bombers in
the event of war. We spent 18 days at a time. 7 on alert, 2 off and 7 on again and then home. Plus 1 day for arrival and 1
for departure. We always hoped our replacement would arrive, but were often disappointed. I have pretty good memories
of Harmon, even though we were quite restricted in our activity. We had access to most of the base, including the
theater, BX, clubs etc. We had no pagers or radios so could only go to locations that had klaxons. I got into Stephenville
and went to St. John once but 99% of my time was spent on the base. There were often bargains at the BX and many of
us hoped we would be there when the Grundig or Telefunken radios came in. Hummels were in the $5-10 range, but my
wife wasn't interested in those at the time! We could have a fortune now! The arrival was planned for early in the
morning so we left our home base around 11 PM the night before. The approach was often in weather and we hoped the
winds would favor a landing to the South because the North approach between the mountains from the South was
sometimes a thrill that we didn't need after flying all night. Enjoy the site. It brings back some good memories.

There was a huge hill just behind our house that was the entrance into the woods around the base. This hill still holds
wonderful winter memories of tabogganing! I attended the elementary school and my sister was in jr. high. I remember
TV did not come on until the afternoon, and I particularly remember a program from Canada called "The Friendly Giant"
I also remember going into town to a Chinse Rest. and eating Sweet 'n ....
I'm not sure if you received the first part of this message. But in case you did not.....our family was stationed there from
Oct 1959 through May 1961. I attended the elementary school and my sister was in jr. high. I still have our year book
with all the grades from elementary through high school represented. Do you get many people who contact you? I met a
man whos wife's family was stationed there just after we left and later in life when they met and married, the Priest,
Father Mooney, who lived on the other side of the duplex we lived in, married this couple. His name is Chuck Cihal, and
I had never met anyone who had even heard of Harmon! He is the O'club manager here at Robins and we were working
together on a 30th wedding anniversary for my sister when some how or other we began a conversation that led us to
Father Mooney and that of course led us to Harmon! I have nothing but wonderful wonderful memoires of Harmon and
Newfoundland. We used to fish a lot on weekends and I remember catching as many "dog fish" as flounder! I would love
to hear from you. My sister is coming over this evening for supper and I will give her this site address, I'm sure she will
love to contact you as well.

comments = I was stationed at Ernest Harmon AFB from June 56 to Oct 57 with the 61 st FIS. My job was as aircraft
mechanic on F-89's. We then transferred to Truax Field, Madison, Wis. I remember going to the "Flick" usually 6 nights
a week. Also making a holster for my Ruger in the base leather shop. There was a three legged dog named "Tripod" who
knew the base bus schedule, so he didn't have to walk very far. The driver's would stop for him and he would get on. The
pilot's of Trans Canada Airlines impressed me with the way they could drop through the "soup" and land right on the
runway. We would go to the base dump about sundown and plink at rats with our 22's. Your photos of town bring back a
lot of memories. It sure was a long Winter although not as cold as Wisconsin. Nice web page.

to Amarillo AFB in 1960. Although I was a young kid then the place left lasting impressions on me and my family and I
still talk about our days up there. I think it made a lasting impression on all of us. My parents have said many times that
being assigned there was one of the best of my dad's career. I recognized the above ad for the "Red Rose Club" and
searched through one of the 3 yearbooks I still have and found the exact ad in the back. I knew I had seen that photo
before. I have the 1957, 58 and 59 "The Rocket" yearbooks. I would love to hear from anybody that lived up there during
the years I was there. Thanks for keeping this site up and running.

because we never see snow in South Texas. I worked in the Mats Terminal and spent most of my time playing Gin with
Captain Depp. My NCOIC was a SMSGT Lay and we had guys like Earl Hudson, Joe(Brower I think) Lived on the top
floor of one of those new "highrise" barracks. Roomed with the late Bob Ott who was a violin player on a local TV show.
I think Bob had been in for about 20 years then and had never been promoted higher than A3c. Got the wife up there and
we moved into a dinky little trailer up on a cliff just outside the base. I left about 5 or 6 months before the base closed.
Wish I could afford to visit one more time. JC

Refueling Squadron. If that wasn't enough, we went through there on a TDY trip to the Azores Islands in early 1959. I
remember all the snow and cold. Used to have a dog that rode all the buses on base. We called him "Tripod", because he
had only three legs! He would wait at certain stops and get off when he was ready. I remember the "green eggs" in the
morning in the chow hall. About the only thing we could do was play cards and go to the club!

Cross. She helped a lot of people with emergency leaves and other problems. When we first arrived we rented an
apartment. Later on we purchased a 40 foot trailer in the only park at that time. We were there when the Queen and
Prince Phillip visited the base. That was a real thrill to be that close to royalty. Had a lot of good times at Harmon.
Maybe we can return one day.

comments = I was assigned to the 98th Air Refueling Sq, stationed
at Lincoln AFB, Nebraska. We went on two different TDY's to Harmon
- once in l956 and again in l957. Stayed for approx. 3 months each
time. Naturally, we were there between November-February, so saw
a lot of cold weather and snow. Last time through was in l959,
on my way to Lajes Field, Azores. I remember we stayed in the barracks
a lot and played poker. Too much snow and cold to do anything else.
Also remember a three-legged dog, we named "Tripod" that roamed
the base. The base buses used to pick him up at different stops.
He would ride a while and seem to know when and where to get off.
Strange what one remembers after 40+ years

comments = I was Chief of Safety at Harmon from 1964 to near the
end in 1966. Would have stayed to the end but the USAF was reallocating
its pilot resources and I got reassigned to Dover, Del.
Harmon was the best assignment I ever had in the Air Force. We
were overseas in a friendly country and we clung together and really
enjoyed the basic friendship of our fellows.
Stephenville was a nice town, peopled with people who were as different
from us as night and day but we spoke the same language (if you could speak Newf!).
I flew that gap landing toward the south. Never liked it, never aced it.
My third daughter was born at Harmon. She is truly a Newf., as
different from the rest of her sisters and night & day.
While at Harmon we never had to buy meat. There were so many moose
hunters rotating back we'd take over a wagon and load up moose from
their freezers to ours. It takes some adjustment when you leave
back to the U.S. to get used to beef, which is rather bland when
you're used to the gamey taste of moose.
Love to hear from anyone about Harmon -- len_ashburn@hotmail.com

I was with the 52nd Air Rescue Squadron. Whwn it was disbanded I
went With the 4087 Air Transport Squadron. We had the red tail C-54

airplanes if they are maintained properly. Ours were in tip top
shape. I think if a place in the north country had an airport, we
made a trip to it. Shure enjoyed the time spent at Harmon. My wife

in Stephensville. I remember playing in the woods at the end of
our street. Our neighbor was a Mountie and he'd bring home moose
meat they'd confiscated from poachers and my mom made tamales from
it. I also remember a guy dressed like the Planter's peanut coming
down the street and tossing packets fo peanuts to the kids. My
third sister was born at the base hospital. We attended school on base too.
I remember that I loved the snow as a kid there. I caught my first
fish there, a 22 inch flounder. My dad was ticked since he had
pointed me to the spot to get me out of his way.
The only friend I can remember by name was a kid named Bobby Coleman
who lived across the street. It was a fun time in a kid's life.
