Served in the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71), was professor of organ in 1873 (Paris Cons.), organist (1873-8), chorismaster/tympanist (Cologne orch.), secretary of the 'Société Nationale de Musique' (1876-90) and later president, co-founded the 'Schola Cantorum' - one of the most famous schools of music (1894), occasional conductor, professor of the Paris conservatoire's ensemble class (1912) and inspector of musical instruction (1899), along with other activities.

d'Indy studied composition with César Franck, and met Liszt, Wagner and Brahms in Germany.
