For the first part of his career he held various positions as organist; later on he became an exceptional professor of composition.
Major Work(s): Best known are the Requiem, Clair de lune and his first Violin Sonata. He also wrote a great deal of often played chamber music.

Fauré was a student of Saint-Saëns, and a teacher of Ravel, both well known composers themselves.
