Demo Review
|
I have never played the original System Shock. I have only seen one screenshot of it from a PC Gamer with the top 50 best games of all time. When I heard about System Shock 3 being in development, I wasn't interested. Probably because it ran on Thief's engine - I was more into graphics. But after I realized RPG's were my favorite games, I looked back into it. I read up on it and was impressed by it's depth. I didn't know if they could pull it off. I got the first E3 video - it blew me away. I couldn't wait for its release. Later came a video with more gameplay, then soon after the demo. I got the demo and started it up. Once I hit the tab key I was immersed into the world of System Shock 2. It felt alot like Half-Life. And in a way it is like Half-Life. I never cared for Half-Life, one day - out of boredom - I searched Half-Life sites, bought it the day it came out and it was number one as being the best game ever(alot of that was going around). My favorite however was Fallout 1 and 2. System Shock 2 mixes the the first person gameplay of Half-Life and then immerses you in a complex RPG experience. The graphics weren't up to par with alot of the newer games, but still was graphically pleasing. (The blood looks cool). I like the ability of actually picking items up, searching carcasses, desks, containers, and the lot for items. I also like how cameras actually affected the game. Goldeneye, for instance, had cameras - but they didn't ever seem to survey anything. In System Shock 2, the cameras affect the way you play. There are two main ways of playing in terms of the cameras. One, walk in front of them, then blow them up and then kill the hordes of guys that come after you. Or two, find a security sytem terminal, hack into it, and disable the cameras - which makes it a hell of alot easier (and more fun). The ability to modify weapons is also cool, by the time I did this the demo was over. Psi can also be learned, which I didn't see particularly neccesary in the demo. But I think it will be very important, if not advantageous in the full version. My machine is very slow - P200mmx, 32MB RAM, 4MB Monster 3dfx - it ran surprisingly smooth.

| Everything, except... | ...long load times. | If the full game is as good as the demo, I think we've found the best game of all time. |
