In one of the most anticipated King of the Ring tournament matches ever, the Big Show took on Kane. After the referee was inadvertently knocked out, Hardcore Holly came out with a steel chair and went after the Big Show. But Kane grabbed the former Hardcore Champion, took the chair away, and chokeslammed him! A fallen Holly retreated to the locker room. With the referee still unconscious, Kane resorted to a chokehold to try and get the Big Show off his feet. Although he had been literally choked for minutes, the Big Show was able to break out of the hold. But while he recovered, the Big Red Machine picked up a chair and absolutely clobbered the Big Show. The thud that echoed throughout the arena when the chair collided with the Big Show’s skull was as loud as had ever been heard. Kane went for the cover, and the referee recovered a few seconds later and administered the three count. With the victory, Kane moved on the face the winner of the Mr. Ass-Ken Shamrock match.
After being badly beaten by Steve Blackman earlier on HEAT, Ken Shamrock was in no condition to fight. But Mr. Ass came to the ring and accused Shamrock of backing down. Shamrock would have nothing of it, and he threw a couple EMTs aside and made his way to the ring. But the "World Most Dangerous Man" was losing blood and was hurt badly. Shamrock went for a huricanrana, but Mr. Ass countered into a powerbomb. Referee Teddy Long had seen enough, and he stopped the match due to Shamrock’s physical condition.
Next up, Chyna became the first woman ever in the King of the Ring tournament as she stepped into the ring with the Road Dogg. In what will go down as one of the best and most exciting King of the Ring matches ever, Chyna really took it to her former DX cohort. In fact, the Ninth Wonder of the World controlled the first several minutes of the match, nearly finishing off the former Outlaw on several occasions. When Road Dogg was left outside the ring, Chyna distracted the referee and Triple H assaulted Road Dogg, literally throwing him pillar to post. After the D-O-double-G escaped Chyna’s sleeper hold, he trapped her into a sleeper of his own. It appeared Chyna was unconscious, but Triple H grabbed her leg and set it on the ropes. The match continued, and Chyna inadvertently bumped into the referee. Triple H seized the opportunity and clobbered Road Dogg with a chain he had wrapped around his fist. However, by the time the referee recovered and administered the count, the Road Dogg had sufficiently recovered enough to kick out. Commissioner Michaels came out to the ring and ordered Triple H back to the locker room! As Road Dogg watched Triple H walk away, Chyna came from behind and low blowed the Road Dogg. But Road Dogg didn’t flinch, and Chyna’s arm was hurt! The D-O-double-G reached into his tights and pulled out a steel protective cup! He promptly hit Chyna with a pumphandle slam and got the victory!
Because their match on HEAT ended in inconclusive fashion, Commissioner Michaels ordered a King of the Ring rematch pitting the Hardy Boyz against Edge and Christian of the Brood. Michaels announced that the winner of the match would be considered the No. 1 contender for the Tag Team Championship. Standing at ringside, Gangrel was sipping from his goblet. He spit the viscous liquid toward Jeff Hardy, but Hardy ducked and the elixir went flying into the eyes of Edge! Edge was temporarily blinded, and Hardy hit him with a variation of a neckbreaker to get the pin!
The King of the Ring tournament semifinals got underway as Kane took on Mr. Ass. During the match, the Big Show came down to the ring, and he was not happy. He grabbed a steel chair and gave Kane a chair shot just as powerful as the one Kane gave to him earlier! Mr. Ass caught a lucky break as he was able to merely make the cover and get the victory!
In other semi-finals match up, two best friends went at it when Road Dogg sqaured off against X-Pac. Before the contest, the two D-Generates told the world that it facing each other would be tough, but in the end, may the best man win and there would be no hard feelings. These two superstars--who know each other better than anyone--put on a spectacular display before X-Pac came out of nowhere to hit with the X-Factor and grab the win!!
The Rock had the opportunity to become a four-time World Wrestling Federation Champion as he challenged the Undertaker. When the referee was knocked unconscious, Paul Bearer poured ether alcohol on a handkerchief. But after he floored the Undertaker with a clothesline, The Rock was able to pick up the handkerchief and use it on the Undertaker! But Triple H came out and Pedigreed The Rock! Both superstar lay on the canvas as the referee recovered and began to administer the ten count. The Undertaker was able to get to his feet and then flop onto The Rock, but the People’s Champion kicked out. The champion got back to his feet, picked up The Rock, and delivered a Tombstone piledriver. This time, the Undertaker got the cover and retained the Federation Championship!
Mr. Ass took on X-Pac to determine the 1999 King of the Ring. Before the match, Billy Gunn announced that he would go right after X-Pac’s fragile neck, and he did just that! X-Pac was able to hit the X-Factor, but he was too hurt to go for the cover. Later, Mr. Ass climbed to the second rope, but in a great show of athletism X-Pac jumped up and dropkicked him down across the ropes. X-Pac kneeled over in pain and Mr. Ass jumped off the middle rope and delivered an especially potent Fame-Ass-Er! Gunn got the pin and became the 1999 King of the Ring!
A briefcase containing all the official paperwork for control of the World Wrestling Federation hung over the ring as the Ladder Match got underway. Although Shane was apparently hurt during his match on HEAT, Commissioner Michaels ordered the match to go on anyway, forcing Mr. McMahon to find a "suitable replacement." And Mr. McMahon apparently found a hired gun in the "Lethal Weapon" Steve Blackman. However, before the match got underway, "GTV" cameras picked up Shane McMahon and his Mean Street cohorts celebrating that they had "pulled one over" on Commissioner Michaels. Shane was clearly not hurt, and when he realized he was on TV, he and the Posse tried to escape from the arena. But Commissioner Michaels cut them off, ordered Shane to go out to the ring, and told Blackman to take his "G.I. Joe-lookin’ ass" back to the locker room! So Austin got the opportunity to beat the hell out of Shane and Vince—and he took advantage of that opportunity. At one point, Austin dropped several ladders from the set onto both the McMahons! Back in the ring, Austin climbed the ladder and tried to grab the briefcase, and control of the Federation. But as Austin moved up the ladder, the briefcase moved up as well! Austin grabbed several officials around the ringside area trying to find out who was responsilble for raising the cable to which the briefcase was attached, but of course no one would admit to it. Inside the ring, Mr. McMahon recovered and began climbing up the ladder (and the briefcase seemed to lower). Austin climbed up the other side of the ladder and the two men had a slugfest on top of the ladder. When Shane recovered, he tipped over the ladder, sending both Austin and Mr. McMahon crashing to the floor. Shane grabbed the ladder, climbed up and grabbed the briefcase to win the match and total control of the company for the McMahons. Knowing that the cable with the briefcase was rigged and he was once again cheated out of a match, Austin was furious as the King of the Ring came to an end!
