Q1: Who wrote the Book of James and what was his relationship to Jesus?

The Epistle of James was written by James, the brother (half) of Jesus (Matthew 13:55). There are three other persons called by this name in the New Testament. One was James, the son of Zebedee, an apostle (Matthew 10:2) and the brother of the Apostle John. Another is James, the son of Alphaeus, who was also one of the twelve apostles (Matthew 10:3). The remaining James is the father of the Apostle Judas (Luke 6:16).

Q3: The movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (starring Harrison Ford) was about the search for the Ark of the Covenant which contained the stone tablets on which God had written the commandments. Was there really such an Ark?

Absolutely! The first stone tablets (Exodus 24:12) were broken by Moses (Exodus 32:19) because he was angry at the Israelites for worshipping an idol while he was on Mount Sinai. The Lord later wrote the words on a second set of tablets (Exodus 34:1) and they were placed in the Ark of the Covenant of which the construction details were dictated by God (Exodus 25:10).

For a time the ark also contained the golden pot of manna and Aaron's (Moses brother) rod (Hebrews 9:4). The ark was ordinarily kept in a room called holy of holies in the Tabernacle as the Israelites proceeded in their journeys through the wilderness. The Tabernacle was disassembled and reconstructed several times as the Israelites traveled. It was with their army (Joshua 6) at Jericho. After Solomon built the temple, it was kept there (1 Kings 8:6-9).

The ark was carried into battles (examples are Midian war - Numbers 31:6; Wall of Jericho - Joshua 6) that resulted in great victories but the ark was captured (1 Samuel 4:10-11) by the Philistines in a battle that Israel lost 30,000 soldiers. During that battle, because of the great sins (1 Samuel 2:12-17) of Hophni and Phinehas (sons of Eli the priest) the Lord caused (1 Samuel 2:34) both of them to be killed as they accompanied the ark into battle. After that battle, great pain and suffering was inflicted on the ark's captors by the Lord (1 Samuel 5) while they possessed it and the Philistines gladly returned it to Israel (1 Samuel 6) seven months later.

Q4. What did Moses and his brother Aaron do that caused God to not allow them to go with the people of Israel to the Promised Land?

The people of Israel grumbled that they did not have enough water and so Moses and Aaron were given instructions by the Lord to cause water to flow from a rock (Numbers 20:7). God's instructions were not followed. The Lord had said to speak to the rock. Moses struck it, not once, but twice (Numbers 20:11). Also Moses did not give the praise and glory to God for this miracle (Numbers 20:10). Because of these things, the Lord would not allow Moses and Aaron to go with the people into the promised land (Numbers 20:12). This place was named Meribah meaning Rebel Waters.

Q5. Micah was a prophet in 8th century B.C. who came from the small town of Moresheth, about twenty miles southwest of Jerusalem. What significant event for Christians does Micah 5:2 foretell?

Written hundreds of years before the event, this verse prophesies the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. The Living Bible version of this passage states "O Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are but a small Judean village, yet you will be the birthplace of my King who is alive from everlasting ages past". The word Ephrathah also refers to Bethlehem (Genesis 35:19).

Q6. In Matthew 2nd chapter is described the travel of the Wise Men (Magi) to visit the baby Jesus in Bethlehem ... bearing gifts. How many Wise Men does the Bible say there were?

Contrary to popular belief and as seen in many Sunday School plays, the Bible does not mention how many Wise Men came to visit the baby Jesus ... only that they brought gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Also the Bible does not indicate that they were kings.

In reality, who did God appoint as the spokesman to help Moses? Why?


On Mount Horeb at the burning bush, God said to Moses "I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt" (Exodus 3:10). Moses had two objections to this request. First he had doubt that the people would believe him (Exodus 4:1) and secondly he told God that he lacked the eloquence for the job. "Moses said to the Lord, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." (Exodus 4:10).


Although God was angry with Moses because of his objections, the Lord appointed Moses' brother Aaron as the spokesman. God said "He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him" (Exodus 4:16)

Q10. Before Joseph died in Egypt at the age of 110, what did he make his brothers promise with an oath?

Joseph said "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place" (Genesis 50:25). Then 430 years later, when 600,000 Israelites left Egypt and bondage, Moses took Joseph's bones with them to fulfill the oath (Exodus 13:19). The bones were eventually buried at Shechem after the Israelites had crossed over into the promised land (Joshua 24:32).

When Moses came down from the Mount and saw that the Israelites were sinning and worshipping a idol (molten calf) he threw the tablets down and broke them (on which the Ten Commandments were written).  He knew that God was very angry with the people and would destroy them but Moses then went another 40 days and nights without water or food and prayed that Aaron and the people not be destroyed.  (refer to Deuteronomy 9:12-29) .
