U.S. WHITE HOUSE ADDRESSES YEAR 2000 COMPUTER PROBLEM

Amid dire predictions by some Christians and other alarmists, President Clinton recently called for accelerating the process of fixing the Year 2000 problem. The "Good Samaritan" law he proposed protects companies that share liability claims resulting from the problem. According to Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut, USA House Representative), vice chair of the Senate Special Committee, the President "gave a forceful wake-up call to the nation." If not fixed, the Year 2000 problem could affect everything from bank accounts to public transportation. The problem stems from computers that cannot store a four-digit year date. On January 1, 2000, these computers will reset to 1900 and potentially cause computers worldwide to fail.
