"Robert Metzgar, a friend and associate of Joe Harris, was music director of a live Nashville television show called, American Country Showcases. A lot of people already signed to record companies and many who got deals later, like Clint Black and Ricky Van Shelton, appeared on the show. During the time that Garth was getting all the rejections from the Nashville record labels, Joe called Robert Metzgar and asked him to have Garth on the show. "There was something very special about Garth from the moment you met him," Metzgar said. "He had an almost angelic approach to people. He was very respectful and humble." A Tennessee Christmas!
Garth's agent, Joe Harris, was active with the Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee. Right before Christmas 1988, Sheriff Richard Sutton of Sumner County called Robert Metzgar, the music director of American Country Showcases and told him about a critical situation. The sheriff knew Metzgar would also alert Joe Harris.
A minister in Cleveland owed $4800.00 in back rent to his landlord, who had obtained a dispossess notice and called Sheriff Sutton to evict the minister and his wife and children.
The Sheriff did not want to go there two days before Christmas
and put these people and their furniture and three children out in the front yard. Metzgar called Joe Harris and said he would with the help of some people, get not only the rent money, but a little more so the family could also have a Christmas. Robert Metzgar and Joe Harris reached into their pockets to contribute a $1000 dollars each.
We went to all of our friends and said, "Look, this is a real bad situation,"Metzgar says, "and we don't want these kids on the street, so ante up. We called in our favors." Metzgar went to see a friend of his, Bob Farr, at his car dealership, Bob Farr Motor Company in Hendersonville. Farr was happy when he received a phone call in April 1999 and was asked to remember what happened next. Robert said to me, "I know from the past what's in your heart, and I need help," and I said, "Let me tell you what happened this weekend." Farr's dealership had been broken into, his office trashed, and several thousand dollars stolen from his safe."
Robert said, "I hate to have to come to you after what's happened, " and Farr said, "What the hell's another thousand?"
Farr gave his friend the money and he says now, "It's paid off a jillion times to me." (Chapter Two: The Dream, American Thunder, Pages 55-57)
