The McCoy Family


Abner MeCoy
1802-1890

Abner MeCoy was born in Craven County, NC, on May 22, 1802. He lived most of his childhood near Murfeesboro, in Rutherford County, TN. In March of 1815, his father John MeCoy was killed in New Orleans while fighting in the War of 1812. His mother, Mary Beesley MeCoy, later married again to John Patterson and the family moved to McNairy County, TN. On January 2, 1824, he married Polly Ann Ferrell, daughter of Charles Ferrell. Abner and Polly had seven children. In 1836, they purchased several thousand acres of land in Tippah County, Misssissippi, from the Chickasaw Indians. The family moved to Mississippi and settled near a village known as Tiplersville. Some of this original land is still owned by Abner and Polly's descendants.

William Carroll MeCoy and Family

William Carroll MeCoy was born February 3, 1833 in McNairy County, TN, and died November 30, 1907, in Tippah County, MS. He married Nancy Marinda (Nanny)Siddall. They had seven children, all shown above. Most of there children went back to the original spelling of McCoy before their deaths.

  • Abner Ferrell MeCoy, born November 22, 1868, married Lucy Katherine (kate)Quinn. He died January 16, 1910 in Tippah County.
  • Richard (Dick) McCoy, born June 11, 1876, married Mary Maddox on April 27, 1913, died April 20, 1961 in tiplersville, MS.
  • John Douglas McCoy, born December 13, 1887, married Salley Hughey Meeks on April 2, 1916.
  • Johua Willburn (Will) McCoy, born June 19, 1874, married Drusillah Sareta Hopkins on September, 2,1899. He died February 13, 1958.
  • Mary Elizabeth McCoy, born September 2, 1872, married Bart Hudson on
  • Samantha (Mantie) McCoy, born October 7, 1872, married Raliegh Easley, died March 17, 1955.
  • Robert Hardy (b) MeCoy, born September 2, 1886, married Ruby Lee Purnell on May 16, 1917, died October 8, 1958.

  • Abner Ferrell MeCoy
    1868-1910

    Abner Ferrell MeCoy lived in Tiplersville, MS, where he farmed for a living. This particluar picture was taken on a trip to Texas. He died at the early age of 41, from what was referred to as "Dropsey," leaving his wife Kate with the responsiblity of raising their three sons.
