Hi, my name is Melissa McCoy-Bell, below you will find
the information on my McCoy Family. Please feel free to browse,
and if you find a link email me and I will share information.
The goal of this page is to link all descendants of
Willis Mecoy together.Family information and land records
suggests that this particular family of McCoy's arrived in
North Carolina before the 1730's, along with a large group of other Scotish
Immigrants. In 1740, land grants were recorded to Willis and
three other McCoy's in and around New Bern, North Carolina.
There are many court records listing them dated in the 18th
century. Willis served in the North Carolina Militia in the
1750's along with a William McCoy.
Past down stories indicate that Willis changed the spelling
of his name from McCoy to Mecoy during the Revolutionary War
as a result of an argument between him and his brother. The brother
served for Britian, and Willis served for the American Colonies. Most
of Willis'offspring returned to the original spelling during the next few
generations. Some, however continued to spell it Mecoy until the middle
of the 20th century, and a few continue to spell it that way today. Willis
offspring are scattered all over the United States, his original family
members first settled in Kentucky and Tennessee.
