ENGLISH REFORMATION

*after the PROTESTANT REFORMATION there were now TWO CHRISTIAN GROUPS in Europe:

1) Catholics- who continued following the
Pope as THE representative (priest) of God on earth.

2) Protestants- Christians who began leaving the Catholic church & believing the ideas expressed by
Luther and others; "Every man his own priest."

*(1529-1533)- Situation was a little different in England in regard to REFORMATION...it was more of a question of ...

"Who is in CHARGE the POPE or the KING?"

*
Henry VIII wanted a male heir to his throne very badly...

*He was married to
CATHERINE of ARAGON...She gave him an heir a GIRL....MARY. She has some other children but they die at birth...etc...

*
Henry still wants a male heir to the throne! So he decides to ask the POPE to give him the OKAY to LEAVE Catherine (the daughter of the VERY CATHOLIC King and Queen of Spain- Ferdnand & Isabella) and marry a new wife ANNE BOLEYN (who is already carrying Henry's baby....he's hoping is a boy).

*The POPE won't do it. (would you want to anger your "#1 supporters"...from SPAIN?)

*So HENRY decides that he's tired of the CHURCH (the pope) having so much POWER over England and over HIM....(besides he doesn't want ANNE having the baby out of marriage, it be a boy and not be legit....Sheeeesh)

* Henry convinces
PARLIAMENT (the law making body in England) to declare him HEAD OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND...(this is easily done by taking all the church's property in ENGLAND and giving it to members of Parliament).

*(1534) The ANGLICAN CHURCH (or The Church of England) is formed

The King (monarch) is the head of the church in England.

* A whole nation leaves the Catholic church (of course the king can't make people leave their BELIEFS)

*From this point on there will be SPIRITUAL/POLITICAL UNREST IN ENGLAND...

Henry VIII dies...he does finally get a son....EDWARD I and he is king...but dies (at age 15)

*The next in line to the throne is the daughter of CATHERINE of ARAGON....Mary...who grew up in SPAIN and is VERY CATHOLIC...

MARY I

*Under Mary's reign many Protestants are persecuted and some killed...(giving her the name of BLOODY MARY) She is queen from (1553-1558)

Then her 1/2 sister
Elizabeth (the child Anne Boleyn had been carrying when Henry started all of this...) becomes queen

Queen Elizabeth I
and she is queen from (1558-1603)

*under her reign there is more freedom for PROTESTANTS (she's Protestant)...

*more people begin finding out for themselves what the Bible said...and their were more beliefs and ideas that people were starting to have on their own...

MANY thougth the ANGLICAN CHURCH was TOO MUCH LIKE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH...

They wanted to continue the movement away from the Catholic church by getting rid of anything that looked CATHOLIC in the ANGLICAN CHURCH....they wanted to "purify" the Anglican Church....and that name would stick...and they became known as...

The
PURITANS
