Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker is the son of Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader). Luke grew up on Tatooine with Uncle Owen (who wasn't really his uncle) and Aunt Peru (who wasn't really his aunt). Owen and Peru were moisture farmers and satisfied with the dull life of farming, but Luke had the blood of a Jedi in him. He longed for adventure, and for a while he wanted to go to the Imperial Academy so he could go places and see new things. This changed when the Empire burned his home and murdered his family. He then wanted to train to be Jedi, and later joined the Rebellion against the Empire. Luke also has a twin sister, Leia.

Princess Leia Organa

Princess Leia Organa grew up on Alderaan as the daughter of Bail Organa, but in reality she is the daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. Leia grew up as royalty, but it did not rob her of her spunk and sense of adventure that came from her parents. Leia became a big part of the Rebellion against the Empire, and used her diplomatic position to help the cause. She is bold, has a sharp tongue and quick wit. She seemed to have no soft spot besides her home planet Alderaan until she met Han Solo. Leia fell in love with Han throughout episodes IV through VI. Leia has a twin brother Luke.

Han Solo

Han Solo has been described in the movies as a scoundrel and scruffy-looking. Han Solo appears to be a self-centered guy, but proves to be a trustworthy friend. Han grew up an orphan on Corellia, and lived a hard childhood with almost no friends except for a mothering wookiee. Han eventually joined the Imperial Cadets, but was thrown out for rescuing the wookiee Chewbacca. With his new friend, Han becomes a smuggler of illegal goods for Jabba the Hutt. In a game of Sabaac (a sort of card game) Han won his ship from friend Lando Calrissian. The deceptively junky Millenium Falcon was a match made in heavy for Han Solo. After several upgrades and numerous improvements, Han made his ship famous for its speed. Han Solo's loner attitude was shattered by Princess Leia. Han is also a great shot with a blaster.

Chewbacca

Chewbacca is a wookiee who was enslaved by the Empire. Chewbacca was eventually freed by Han Solo. Chewbacca, a.k.a. Chewy, claimed a life debt to Han and forced his company on him. Eventually the two became friends, with Chewy being instrumental in Han's smuggling business. Chewbacca's inability to speak Basic makes it hard for those who don't know how to speak like a wookiee, but he is good natured about the barrier and always shows what he means through his actions. Chewbacca is very loyal.

R2D2

R2D2, the droid, is a very important character in the entire saga. Originally a droid on Queen Amidala's ship, he always is rolling a few steps behind the action, or in some cases through it. R2D2, or "artoo", is a spunky droid who rarely does exactly what he is told. Droid C3PO always tells him what he should or shouldn't be doing, and artoo always has a sharp witted beep for a comeback. R2D2 is also very functional. Artoo has a plug for accessing computers and unlocking doors, a claw for grabbing things, a saw for cutting things, a taser for defending himself, rocket boosters for flying, a radar and other sensors for detection of people and vehicles, a holoprojector for playing back messages, disk slots for imputing data, and a storage compartment (used in episode VI to secret Luke's lightsaber into Jabba the Hutt's palace).

C-3PO

C3PO, or "Threepio", can be described as pompous. He is always telling R2D2 what not to do and frequently reminds his masters of the odds against this or the odds against that. C3PO was created by Anakin Skywalker when he was still a slave. Later he joins Anakin and Padme when they visit Tatooine looking for Anakin's mother. C3PO is very good as providing comic relief without becoming an annoying character (such as Jar Jar Binks). C3PO is useful, though. He is fluent in over six million forms of communication, as he repeatedly reminds us. He is also quite pessimistic.

Lando Calrissian

Lando Calrissian is a good friend of Han Solo, and is a gambler and a shrewd businessman. Lando is a man of style and class; he wears expensive clothes and wears a cape. His last wish was for Anakin to be trained, which as it turned out was a bad idea.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi Knight who was very important throughout the saga. He was trained by Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn, and then trained Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan found training the emotional Anakin Skywalker to be difficult, and would frequently argue with his apprentice. In Obi-Wan's later years he lived on Tatooine as Ben Kenobi, unknown to the Empire.

She played a leading role in retaking Naboo from the Trade Federation, and lived through several assasination attempts and a battle in the Clone Wars. Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus

Count Dooku was learning to become a Jedi until he left the Order due to his disagreements with the Council. Soon after he left, Dooku was pulled to the dark side by Darth Sidious (the Emperor). Using his charisma he rallied a Separatist army from several disgruntled groups and nations. He then provoked a war with the Republic by attempting to execute a Senator, a Jedi Knight, and the Jedi's apprentice. This war made emergency powers for Chancellor Palpatine (secretly Darth Sidious)necessary in order to allow use of an Army of the Republic. Count Dooku was challenged into a lightsaber duel first by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi (who he beat easily) and then by Jedi Master Yoda himself. Knowing he was beaten, Dooku escaped into his ship to return to his master on Coruscant.

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Anakin Skywalker was born on Tatooine with Shmi Skywalker his mother and the Force itself as his father. Anakin was born into slavery, and was a slave until he was freed by Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn when he was still a young boy. He promised his mother he would come back for her, and when he did his mother was close to as a prisoner of some Tusken Raiders. Due to the rough childhood he had, he held a lot of hate in him, and the Jedi Council decided not to train him as a Jedi. Eventually, he was allowed to be trained by Obi-Wan Kenobi. As he learned, he became more angry and arrogant. This was due to the secret influence of Chancellor Palpatine (Darth Sidious). While he was training to become a Jedi, Anakin fell in love with Padme Amidala, and they got married and had two children. Both were hidden from Anakin, and he did not even know of the second until much later. Eventually Anakin turned to the Dark Side, joining Palpatine. Due to injuries sustained in a lightsaber battle with Obi-Wan, Anakin had to wear a breathing regular mask and other life support equipment in his suit. It was then that he became Darth Vader. As Darth Vader, he erradicated the Jedi. Only Yoda and Obi-Wan escaped the slaughter to later train Anakin's son as a Jedi. His son, Luke, faced Vader in a lightsaber duel. After defeating Vader, he refused to finish him. As Palpatine nearly killed Luke with Force Lightning, Vader suddenly saw the error of his ways and returned to the light side of the Force. He threw his master into the reactor core, and then died after seeing his son with his own eyes.

Around this time Palpatine was given emergency powers in order to deal with the Separatists crisis, which was generated by Count Dooku. As time went on, Palpatine never gave up his "emergency powers". He dismantled the Senate and proclaimed himself the Emperor, and the Republic became the Empire. Around this time he had a new apprentice, Darth Vader, or Anakin Skywalker. Palpatine and Vader erradicated the Jedi, who were their last true threat. Or so they thought. The Rebel Alliance, once joined by Vader's son, Luke Skywalker, eventually destroyed the Empire and ended Palpatine's reign as Emperor.
