President's
Welcome:
My deepest apologies for this delayed “message from the president”
welcome letter but for the first part of the school year I, along with three other people were desperately
trying to get friends off of an I10 overpass in New Orleans after they had been there for three days with
no food or water, and then spent much time in Houston volunteering with the Red Cross.
I can’t tell you if it was an already existing personal inner drive that led us to attempting such drastic
efforts as trying to slip past the American National Guard at the New Orleanian city limits or
if it was an informed decision born of four years of Anthropological learning
and thinking, but I can tell you this: in reflecting on the present worldwide events
that are unfolding in our lifetimes, I can think of no better time than right now to be
involved in the academic world of Anthropology. So to those returning students,
welcome back and to those who are new to the department, stay the course, literally.
It is both an amazing and critical time to learn and be involved in this most important of
fields, the study of this vast social world we all belong to. Good luck to all!
Paula Stoyanoff,
ASA President, 2005-2006
