Protecting The Youth Of Canada...You And Me Bully Free!

Symptoms of Bullying

The Defenition of Bullying: A person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people. Bullying causes children to feel lonely and foreshadows crime and violence. It is defined as aggressive behaviour by one person or group carried out repeatedly and over time. Their target is usually someone less powerful. Bullies often pick on those who are not their size or do not have the ability to defend themselves effectively. The worst thing about bullying is that it is a conscious, willful behaviour that is repeated day after day. Bullies want to harm others and make them feel as though they are much better than the victim. It is the assertion of power through abuse, whether this be emotional or physical. When you think of bullying it is common to think of this taking place on the playground and amongst younger children. However, as kids grow older the violence usually continues and progresses into something with more severity. For instance: sexual and workplace harrasment, gang attacks, assault, marital violence and child abuse. Children in lower grades are more likely to be victims of same age bullies. They also experience more direct bullying whereas older children endure in-direct bullying. The results of someone who is being bullied are very diverse and are quite complicated to detect. Parents and teachers should be watching for these signs and know how to recognize the signals. Children who are bullied, either by classmates or parents, have very different reactions. For some, it is more of an internal factor (skin problems, headaches and muscle aches) and for others it is external (fear of disapproval, irritability, suicidal attempts and acting out). Don't Just Stand There, Do Something About It!
