"The consequences of navigation to Saronikos Gulf maritime environment, considering the modern techniques of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management"

The present study examines the effects of Navigation (a mean of pollution of the maritime eco-system), to the coastal and maritime environment of Saronikos Gulf, aiming to suggest methods of Environmental Management, Sustainable Development and Systematic Monitoring of this very important human activity. To approach that relationship, we are using scientific methods and modern techniques of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management, as these have been defined in the Agenda 21, in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (UNCED 1992) and also in the World Coast Conference (WCC 1993).

Firstly, the theoretical background covers the international innovating methods of Integrated Coastal Zone Management, emphasizing at different approaches of these environmental problems. Late studies at the coastal and maritime environment of Saronikos Gulf, are then presented, focusing at the Physical (Geology, Bathymetry, etc) and Chemical (Dissolved Oxygen, Nutrient salts, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton, etc) characteristics as well as Dynamic (Hydrology, Flows) of the gulf’s water masses. The consequences on the coastal and maritime environment of navigation, as well as the international measures applied for overcoming these are presented, aiming on establishing navigation environmental friendly. Environmental pollution comparative data of other transportation means are provided.

Finally, a statistical analysis of navigation accidental pollution at the coastal and maritime environment of Saronikos Gulf is conducted (NTUA Maritime Transport) and conclusions are extracted involving the geographical areas, the causes, kinds and the amount of pollution entering Saronikos Gulf. A mention at the social, economic consequences of pollution at the Saronikos Gulf area, and confrontation measures of reducing or effacing it, considering the Modern Techniques of Integrated Coastal Zone Management are presented.
