Tim and David Wells were the only American League pitchers to win 20 games in 2000. Tim earned that 20th win on the final day of the regular season when he shut out the Texas Rangers to help Oakland win the AL Western Division title. Tim finished at 20-6 as he led the Major Leagues with a .769 winning percentage. He thrived in the pennant race, too, winning seven straight games to close the regular season. Tim pitched in the All-Star Game and became the first Oakland hurler to win 20 games since Bob Welch and Dave Stewart did it in 1990. Tim also emerged as a "stopper" of sorts. He posted an 8-2 record following an A's loss.

For a young pitcher, Tim utilizes a variety of weapons. The skinny righthander has a good fastball that reaches the low 90's, a curve, a splitter and a heavy sinker. Tim reached the majors in 1999 after beginning the year in Double-A. He had no trouble adjusting, going 11-2, with a 3.23 ERA and a team-leading 132 strikeouts in 21 starts. Tim had a great career at Auburn University and was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year as a senior in 1997. He was selected to the All-SEC team as an outfielder and a pitcher after hitting .396 with 18 homers and 95 RBIs, while posting a 15-2 record, a 2.97 ERA and 165 strikeouts.
