::Caroline Affair:: A US-Canadian incident that strained relations between the two countries. Canadian rebels were using the American steamboat Caroline for delivering supplies to Navy Island, their refuge on the Niagra River. Canadians still loyal to the British sank the steamboat in American waters, and the US protested to the British minister to Canada. Although the Canadian commander was tried, he was acquitted.
