My Dad joined the Army on 4 May, 1942, and because he had prior service, was asked to attend Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After completion of Adjudant General school, he was assigned to the 593rd EBSR Engineers at Ft. Ord, California. The unit was then transferred to New Guinea and would soon be known as the "Island Hoppers". They would move from island to island building bridges and landing ramps for vehicles with supplies and troops.
