  • Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is using his interest in the sport of Jiu Jitsu to create the premier Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Grappling Classic. The event will be at the Cabarrus Arena and Expo Center in Concord, NC on Jan. 25, 2003. Organizers say this tournament has the potential to be the largest Jiu Jitsu tournament in the world. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Tickets for the this event are available through Ticketmaster and will go on sale starting Dec. 12. Earnhardt Jr. will be the host of the event and other NASCAR Winston Cup Series notables and local celebrities will be on hand to observe the competition.   • Dale Jr. wins Dale Earnhardt Toughest Driver award
    For the second straight season, drivers chose Junior for the award that bears his late father's name. Earnhardt, who edged Sterling Marlin by one vote, calls the honor "cool" and says he is determined to build a team that would make his father proud. (sportingnews.com, 12/3)

  • In a recent poll by Data Development Corp. Inc., Dale Jr. was selected as the number one choice among sports fans if they could choose their own personal "designated driver." Earnhardt Jr. has participated in Anheuser-Busch's Consumer Awareness program to encourage designated drivers, including a commercial that aired during the Super Bowl and other sports telecasts in 2002. More than 40 percent of the sports fans chose Dale Jr., who was followed in the poll results by Venus Williams and Derek Jeter.


  • Editors at Amazon.com have selected Dale Jr's "Driver #8" as one of the top 10 best sports books of 2002. Based on sales figures from the giant online book seller, "Driver #8" was the top-selling sports book of the year. The paperback version of "Driver #8" came out Dec. 1. [more below]


  • Dale Jr. will test at Daytona Int'l Speedway in January. Fans wishing to see teams prepare for Speedweeks 2003 are welcome to attend any of the test sessions, which run from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Oldfield Grandstand is free and open to the public with access through the lobby of DAYTONA USA.   • Driver No. 8," Dale Jr's written record of his rookie season in the Winston Cup series, hit the shelves in paperback form on December 1. The hard-cover version from Warner Books spent 13 weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller list (peaking at No. 4) earlier this year, and expectations for the paperback are equally high.
