Thomas Anderson is a man leading two lives. In one he is a respectable person, working a respectable job in a major corporation, who even helps his landlady take out the garbage. In his other life he is a computer hacker going by the name, Neo, who has been searching for Morpheus. He is the reluctant hero, who over the course of the movie discovers his own potential and grows, though bounded by his own belief. Eventually Neo undergoes the "shamanic death" when killed by Agent Smith, which awakens the dormant ability within him. His death fulfill's The Oracle's prophecy that he "must be waiting for something" - perhaps his next life. The One is the reincarnation of a man who was born inside the Matrix when it was first built. This man had the ability to recreate the Matrix in any fashion he saw fit. He was The One who awakened and unplugged the first of the dreamers within the Matrix. Late in the movie when Neo becomes The One, he literally "becomes one with the matrix". |
