Friday 5/1/2005 Pitcher of the Month award winners announced The best month of April in the American certainly had Anaheim's right-hander Pedro Martinez, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 4-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 46.2 innings of work he allowed just 28 hits while striking out 54, compiling an ERA of just 0.96. Pedro also fired a shutout. Jason Middlebrook pitched like a legend in April, and the National named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 4-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 42.2 innings of work he allowed just 18 hits while striking out 30, compiling an ERA of just 1.05. Jason pitched a shutout as well.
Friday 5/1/2005 Batter of the Month award winners announced The Batter of the Month award in the American goes to Texas' Brian Giles this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .480 and hit .383, while driving in 32 runs. Jack Cust of Houston wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National. He hit .370 with 38 RBI and slugged .800 in 100 at bats.
Thursday 4/30/2005 Jack Cust knocks lights out with three homeruns HOUSTON - Jack Cust beat Chicago (N), but he did it without mercy, playing like a one man wrecking crew. Houston's first baseman slugged three homeruns, once again proving that he is among the elite sluggers. His 1st shot, off Mark Prior in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. It tied the ballgame at 1. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Mark Prior. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 450 feet, cleared the wall in left field. The game was tied, 7-7, after the blast. Jack stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, with FOUR runs scored and driving in 5 runs. His homerun total this year is 13, along with 38 RBI. Houston improved it's record to 20-8, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Wednesday 4/29/2005 Adam Dunn clubs five hits in a game COLORADO - Adam Dunn is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Danny Graves in the 5th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 392 feet from home plate in right field. Number 3 in the 6th inning accounted for a double. His 5th hit was a RBI double off Josh Towers in the 9th inning. He had singles in the 3rd inning (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Adam scored 4 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .320. The final score of the game was 17-4.
Monday 4/27/2005 Seattle's Pujols wins Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the American goes to Seattle's Albert Pujols this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 23 at bats he hit .478 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. He has hit 8 longballs while batting .359 this season. His 33 hits and 16 walks add up to a .455 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the American in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National Player of the Week award goes to Lance Berkman, Houston's starting rightfielder. In 20 at bats he hit .600 with 3 HR and 13 RBI.
Tuesday 4/21/2005 New York (A)'s Brad Wilkerson has great day, hits three longballs BALTIMORE - Brad Wilkerson was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered New York (A) to a 6-5 win over Baltimore by homering three times. In the 4th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Matt Clement. His 2nd shot, off Dave Veres in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. It tied the ballgame at 4. Number 3 in the 13th inning, a shot estimated at 448 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Brad went 3 for 6, with three runs scored with 3 RBI. In 1905 career at bats, he has hit 74 homeruns and collected 290 RBI. On 4/10/2005, Alex Rodriguez was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Monday 4/20/2005 Beckett and Boone win Player of the Week award Seattle's pitcher Josh Beckett had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American Player of the Week. Josh went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.04, while fanning 17 in 17.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .213 against Josh this season. While posting an ERA of 3.67 he went 3-1 in 4 starts, fanning 26 and walking 8 hitters. Josh has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 2nd in the American in wins! Bret Boone from Colorado wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .455, while driving in 10 runs.
Saturday 4/18/2005 Jarrod Washburn dominates Tampa Bay, gives up just one hit MINNESOTA - Jarrod Washburn had some fun again. Tampa Bay hitters did not. Minnesota's lefty gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 179 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Washburn (3-1) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 57 of 111 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Minnesota was rightfielder Mark Quinn, he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. Minnesota scored 4 runs on 4 hits.
Friday 4/17/2005 Mike Piazza ropes 2000th career hit CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s catcher Mike Piazza had already some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1997 where he hit .362 with 40 homeruns and 124 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' His hit in the 6th inning was a double off Jeremy Affeldt.
Monday 4/13/2005 Bellhorn and Nevin win Player of the Week award The American's best player of the week was Baltimore's Mark Bellhorn, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Mark was on fire, hitting .500 with 5 HR and 11 RBI. Bellhorn has walked 6 times this year and posts a .405 OBP. While batting .306, 11 for 36, he has driven in 12 runs. He's 4th in the American in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! The National's best player of the week was Atlanta's Phil Nevin, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Phil pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .478 with 4 HR and 6 RBI while slugging 1.087. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Phil is hitting .378 this year, with 17 hits in 45 at bats. He has driven in 9 runs, slugging .711.
Friday 4/10/2005 Alex Rodriguez knocks lights out with three homeruns CLEVELAND - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Detroit's shortstop Alex Rodriguez accomplished that feat in a 7-6 win over Cleveland. His 1st shot, off Bud Smith in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. In the 4th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bud Smith. A pitch from Jason Simontacchi in the 7th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 421 feet from home plate in right-center. Alex collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three runs with 5 RBI. So far this season he is batting .256 with 5 homers and 9 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! On 6/14/2004, Corey Patterson was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Monday 4/6/2005 Giles and Ramirez win Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the American goes to Texas' Brian Giles this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 21 at bats he hit .381 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National Player of the Week award goes to Houston's third baseman Aramis Ramirez. In 26 at bats he hit .385 with 6 HR and 11 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Saturday 4/4/2005 Jeff Francis turns in great performance against Milwaukee LOS ANGELES - It was a great day for Los Angeles' left-hander Jeff Francis. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Milwaukee on Saturday. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Francis (1-0) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 100 pitches for strikes. Ramon Hernandez provided Los Angeles with the offense Francis needed as he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Thursday 4/2/2005 Texas' Adrian Beltre gets the cycle KANSAS CITY - Adrian Beltre hits 'em where they ain't. Kansas City certainly agrees as Texas' third baseman unloaded five hits and hitting for the cycle. In the 1st inning he belted a double off Chris George. A 420 feet drive to left-center marked his 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Chris George in the 3rd inning. A pitch from Chris George in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A single in the 8th off Ramiro Mendoza accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 9th off Grant Roberts accounted for his 5th hit. Adrian did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .667. 17 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Adrian. On 9/25/2004, Rob Ryan was the last player to hit for the cycle.
